I had one. I sold it here on the EE. Much like your observations , I found it heavy and awkward. I have no pics , but I used a flashlight in a holder mounted on the bottom of the mag tube. One of those simple inexpensive holders.

I sold mine off too. I think they're overrated. You could do a small picatinny rail and mount a pistol light.

I have them on 4 of our 870s. I personally wouldn't have a HD shotgun without one. YMMV.
But I didn't like the balance of the 590A1 I had and got rid of it, so I can understand how adding any more weight to the front of one of those would be a bad thing... |

I recently bought one and I must say, it was well worth the investment. Previously, I had a Streamlight mounted on my magazine tube. I bought the Surefire model 318LM and put it on my duty shotgun, and it makes things much easier.
Plus, Surefire has a lifetime warranty. |

Try GG&G's forend mount that has a rail on the side so that you can mount your M3 to it.

I'm with the Yay sayers. I bought a 323LMG for my 590 and I wouldn't think of getting rid of it. It's simple to use and doesn't add all kinds of attached accessories hanging off the gun. The new single cell LED versions are lightweight enough for me, and plenty bright too.

I have a 323LMG on my 18.5" 590A1 and while it adds some weight its not excessive. Plus the new LED version is less bulky. The Surefire 323LMG is a great light an perfect for my HD needs.

I have the old 618 for my 870. I hate the weight. I used to run a 6+1 setup with the 618 along with a side saddle and a Knox Spec Ops. The whole weapon must of weighed over 10lbs with all of that crap. I know have slimmed it down somewhat.

I have a Surefire 6P LED mounted on the mag tube of my 870. And a Pelican M6 LED on my Mossberg 500, attached to the mag tube with a cheap holder.

The new 323LMG weighs a hair over 1 pound with batteries. It offers great versatility for HD use.
If you don't want to go that route consider the weight of the existing forearm, some sort of way to attach a light holder & then the weight of the light itself. The 323 isn't going to be much heavier. |

If you think a surefire dedicated fore-end is too heavy maybe going to the gym would help. It is the most ergonomic light to mount on a shotgun, period.
I can easily keep my right hand held on the stock in firing position and reload the gun from the sidesaddle or springfed stock without much fatigue from my left hand. And I was serious about maybe going to the gym and getting in fightling shape is the 1+lb fore-end seems too heavyfor you to handle. |

Thanks for all the replies. Seems like it's about 50/50 on this. I decided to take the Surefire off. I'm going to run the gun sans light for a while and revisit it later. I might go with the GG&G forend later, or just leave it alone. It's not that the light is too heavy, I just find it big and bulky. Plus it makes the already front heavy 590A1 even heavier in the front, making for not so great balance. I assure you that I go to the gym regularly and I'm in good shape
Even someone in excellent shape will fatigue after a while when shouldering a long gun for an extended period of time. And a pound of weight on the front of the gun makes a pretty big diffference. Try clearing a large building for 2 - 3 hrs without ever lowering your long gun. Your arm will get tired. I don't use my 590 in this capacity, but thought I would bring up the point.

I'm kinda in the same boat, my 500 with a breaching barrel, Surefire 623 forend, a Tac Star side saddle, and 12 2-3/4" 00 Buck, weighs in at around 9 lbs. I realized how much heavier it was than a standard 500 running shotgun drills. I saw this used here. Looks like a good alternative to use a X300 or such.

Three of our four are the older ones and I still like them, but the new model is far superior IMHO. If a shotgun was my primary HD weapon I'd have to upgrade all around. |

The price reflects the quality and the fact it is the last light you will ever need to buy for that weapon. Surefire has the a life time warrenty and their customer service is the best in the Industry.

I bought the 618LF LED model for my 870P and at first I thought it was heavy/awkward. I switched the factory stock to a Hogue 12" and it is a non-issue now.
The only things I regret is not getting the 618LFG model with the lockout switch. Also, if I had waited a couple more weeks, I could have gotten the newer 618LMG LED model. I'm happy with my setup for now. I'd like to go to a 14" SBS eventually.

I use it with my 618LF and it keeps me from AD'ing the light when racking the shotgun or handling it and I can still easily depress the momentary switch when needed. |

Ive run the Surefire forend on my 14" 590 for over 5 years, 4 or 5 shotgun classes and probably 10000 rounds of mixed buck slug and bird. Even burnt the anodizing off of the light and it keeps on trucking. It does add a bit of weight but IMHO its the most intuitive lighting setup to be had on shotguns.

I have the surefire forend on my 870. It is a must have on any home defense shotgun. I never worried about the weight. I use it around the house, not phesant hunting or carrying through the jungle.

Nice rig there Undedog. I can see that the 318 would end about flush with the barrel. Add a Wilson 1 rd tube and keep a 5+1 capacity with enough light to deal with a threat. I like the idea.
