General use, range, home defense, but not hunting yet. I think I'd get a different shot gun for hunting.

It's a great platform with nearly 60 years of service. $300? That's pretty high unless it's nearly new gun with a remchoke barrel. I'm glad I don't live where you do though.  I picked up a MINT 20 gauge lightweight magnum for ~$240. Picked up one 12 gauge magnum for $230 in good shape, and another for $150, also in good shape. I've passed on a bunch of the older 2 3/4" only guns for $160-$180. All of these found at local pawn shops. Hell, I even bought a rough 16 gauge wingmaster for $80 from a pawn shop here.
I have enough of them now that I can leave one with an 18" barrel installed, and just pick up one of the others when it's time to go hunting. |

870 is a good multipurpose shotgun that can do it all.

'round here a rough used 870 Express brings $300... IF you can find one. The Wingmaster I picked up was $285 after shipping/FFL fees on Gunbroker and is in the mid-90s on condition, fixed modified choke, vent rib. I've never once seen a bargain on a used 870
 either here or back in my old hometown. Cheapest I ever saw was a used 870 Express for $240 with a coating of rust. There's about 10 pawn shops I check nearly weekly, no love. Everyone holds on their 870s I guess.

The Rem 870 and Mossberg 500/590 are both excellent shotguns and you probably can't go wrong with either, it's just a matter of taste. I have two Mossbergs (500A Mariner and 930 SPX) and plan to get at least one more (590A1 SPX). 12-gauge is a real piss and with the diversity and availablity of ammo, it's a great choice. I wish I had gotten into these sooner (I've been a total AR freak for over 20-years), but I'm certainly having fun with them now.

The 870 is a great choice since it can be adapted to any role you might have for a shotgun. Just be warned that in addition to BRD there is also BSD.

I recently bought a 'tactical' 870. The thing that impressed me most was the ejector(s): they are very wide and strong, compared to the ejector on my Winchester 1200.
Prolly can't go too wrong with the 870. |

the first gun i got was a Wingmaster Bicentenial Comorative from '76 my grandfather gave me for my 18th birthday. I wouldnt trade it for anything. they are a joy to shoot, very modular, and easy as hell to clean. Why would you want to get a different gun to hunt with?? the 870 can go from busting clays with a 30" to taking a white tail with an 18" bbl in 30 seconds. thats part of what makes the remington 870 the only firearm a man will ever NEED to own. (wants are something else, hence my other toys)
