I have been shooting IDPA with a local group in my home town. They have a side shotgun match after the main match. I have been doing some reading about the 870, 590 and the 1300. I would like to keep it under $400. Im leaning towards the 1300. I know it's all personal opinion, but I would like to here yours.

All three will work, but...

Winchester is going out of business.  The FN pump shotgun is the same thing with improvements.  The FN runs about $350 before shipping, background check, etc.

Mossbergs work and are relatively inexpensive.

The Remington is about the best platform to go with.  You can get into a good, used one for about $225 depending on options if you search around.  If you have a local dealer that does business with Davidson's, they have a sale going right now on the 870 Express HD 7-shot for about $287.  5077
The regular HD is the same price (not on sale)  5549  For about $380 you can get the 20" barrel 8-shot in OD green 6471

If those links don't work go here J&D and use the "Gun Search" feature.

I love the 590 got one and it works great!!  Not sure how heavy the 870 is but the 590 is kinda heavy but for a big guy like me it's no problem.

Thanks for the info. Looks like the 870. I have a 870 with a 28 inch barrel I use for clays. Should be an easy transistion. I pick up an new HD 870 at my local dealer for $309. Any suggestion on my first add-on? I was looking at a TACSTAR side saddle.

Remington 870, IMHO, An older Winchester model 12 is possibly the best pump shotgun
ever made, but sadly they are no longer available except on the used market.

I have a Model 12, 20GA made in 1913.  It has been handed down from my Great Gandaddy to Grandpa to my Dad and now to me.

590 all the way, I've got 2 of them and they've never missed a beat. I've owned 870's and still have a 1300 but still came back to the 590.

If you've got to ask... I 'd say start with the Winchester then maybe eventually move on to Mossberg (or vice-versa, doesn't matter). Save the 870 for last; that way you'll find out first hand that the other two don't compare.

My first pump gun was a remington 870 (it was my second shotgun, first was a single shot savage), since then I'v bought 4 Winchester 1300s (2 defenders, 1 wood 1 plastic- 2 28"ers, 1 wood 1 plastic) and 3 Mossbergs (a .410 wich wouldn't run out of the box, a 500 cruiser and a 590)

Either you just have a natural taste for cheap guns, or you don't know quality when you see it. With the exception of the 870, I wouldn't have either one if somebody gave them to me. I simply wouldn't waste the safe space on junk.

I've owned all 3 at one time or another. They all have strong points as well as weak points. I prefer the 870. I just bought a 870HD for $269 at Sportsmans Warehouse (5077). As for "add ons", I use the sidesaddle*(see note below) for extra rounds. A good mag follower and jumbo head safety are others I would suggest.

If using the factory forearm you can use the 4 shot model of the sidesaddle with no problems. The 6 shot will require a new forearm or trimming the factory one. Hope this helps.....
