I have an 870P which is dead-reliable and I'm not lloking to replace it.  I don't "need" another SG, but the semi-auto bug bites every once in a while.  A used 11-87 came up for sale in a local shop for $200.  It shows a bunch of exterior wear and is police trade-in.  I know from experience that many police SG's are carried around a bunch and banged up, but have been shot very little.  Cosmetically they may be an ugly duckling, but mechanically they are ofter nerar-new or at least in very good condition.

Has anyone had experience with the 11-87 Police?  What are your thoughts and experience?  In looking this one over, what should I look for?

Thanks

I am not a Remington fan, but for $200 I would have bought that 11-87 in a heartbeat.

Nice find.

I have never seen even a well used 1187 Police for less than $300 anywhere. Buy it, try it. If you do not like it, sell it for a profit.

If it's still there tomorrow I'll snatch it up.  I guess at that price I can turn it around pretty quickly.

Now that that's done, has anyone had any serious problems which didn't involve light loads?  I understand that the 11-87/P works best with full-power buck and slugs and has to be modified for trap loads and such.  I believe that Remington even makes a retro-fit part just for shooting light loads.  I plan on occasional practice with trap loads but will mostly shoot the big stuff.

I have the 11-87 and 11-87 Police, no difference in function that I can see. The police model shoots light target loads just fine.

Well I got to examine it closely today and it seems to have some substantial issues.  The mag tube thread leade is flattened as if it was dropped on edge, the rear sight windage and elevation bases missing and the base seems to be welded on slightly crooked.  Also, the barrel seems to be ever-so-slightly leaning towards one side.  That's too much to deal with.

I appreciate everyone's input and advice.  Too bad this didn't work out.  Like the man once said, if it looks too good to be true...

Talk to a gunsmith.....these things are sometimes easy to fix. Even if you had to put $200 into it.....not a bad deal. These things go for $600+ new.

It also has a 21" barrel and I was looking for an 18" barrel.

The finish isn't important from a functionality standpoint, but there were some pretty deep gouges in the barrel and the wood furniture.  We have 870's riding around in police cars for the past 12 years which don't look nearly as abused.  I'm just a bit concerned this may have befallen some serious damage and was "repaired."  I could be wrong, but I'm in no hurry and would rather wait for a nicer one to come along for a few more dollars.

I also noticed it was marked a little differently than the new 11-87 Police in the showcase next to it.  The receiver was marked "11-87" on the left side and "POLICE" on the right.  The new one had "11-87 POLICE" on the left side.  Also, the carrier release button on the used gun was smaller than the new gun.  Otherwise, they looked identical from what I could tell.

Thanks again
