i look at all these tactical shotguns with holes drilled in the barrels i have to ask how well do they work?  it this something i can do myself?  it looks easy.  i have a drill press.

but is it safe?  what are the pitfalls?

new barrels are about 150.00.

i can't see that it's that big a deal.
250.00 seems a little much for drilling holes in a pipe.

Up to you, but if you drill your own holes try to copy somebodys pattern.  They place the holes in an attempt to direct blast to reduce muzzle jump.  It affects recoil very little.

The thing is if you decide to invest in backboring later, you don't want a half assed barrel for that.  Kurt at KKF made a great ported 20" barrel for an 870 of mine about 2 years ago.  I bought the barrel directly from him, see if he will port your barrel for you.

$250 is the price for a brand new barrel with porting. It costs $75 to port the barrel you supply.
