I've got a question. The local gunshop has a Rem Home Defense w/extended mag for the same price as a Mossy 590da1. Which of the two woulod be the better buy? I know the Rem has more aftermarket accessories but the fore grip on the Mossy looks like it would give you a better grip. Which would you guys choose??

Ok I'll bite. 870 if you want an unlimited number of after market barrels, chokes, stocks, sights, and other assorted junk. 590 if you want a bayonet. Why would you want a bayonet on your shotgun you ask, I have no fricking idea but they are very popular around here. If there is ever a drive by bayonet killing I'm questioning this bunch first. I guess the bayonet must be for after you pump the zombie home invader with 9 slugs, having no apparent effect, you can get him with the blade

I really have to be careful. I have insulted the bayonet in the past and caught hell for it. What ever floats your boat. MIKE.

870, you can buy any grip you want, usually run about $25 bucks, but the one that comes on it is actually a little bit easier to use at first than a "tactical" foregrip. At least in my opinion...

I prefer to keep a tight grip on the gun which means keeping my thumb down on the stock and not using it to work the safety. Mossberg has a top mounted safety you work with your thumb, 870 has a safety mounted in the trigger guard you work with your trigger finger so I prefer the 870. You need to compare that to be sure which gun you prefer. When hunting, the only time I screw up and leave the safety on is typically with an O/U and top mounted safety. It is much quicker to check the safety with a touch of the trigger finger then to pull your thumb up to hit the safety.

Well, mike103 is correct about the bayonet. I tried duct taping one to my 870, but it just wouldn't hold up to any serious thrusting...and the damned thing almost sliced me on the way by when it came off during a vertical buttstroke!

Still like the 870, though.

Can't really go wrong with either. My choice is 870 but there's nothing wrong with the Mossie.

Having owned a 590 and 870 I would say go with the 870. The quality on all of the 870s I've owned is much higher than the 590.

Shivan, I have a pool does that count.

I hate to say this in the shotgun forum but for close in work I will stay with a pair of Glocks, 19 and 26. I keep a Glock thirty shot mag close by just in case.

I know that I sound like a salesman for big green all the time, sorry can't help it, but having owned several 870's and several 500's I just can't recommend Mossy over Rem unless money is an issue. MIKE.

Thanks! The more I think about it I would lean toward the 870. I already have a Mossy for my slug gun for deer in the Hoosier state. I'll probably go with the Remy because of the accessories. For defense loads I'm think #4 buck or 000 for more pellets per shot in a 3". Should be potent medicine for evil-doer virus

Think about what goodies you actually want.

Are you ever going to do 3 gun?

Is this a "bedroom gun"?

Extra mag capacity is cool... but at 3 am are you really ever gonna need 9 shots to resolve the situation?

I vote for a Mossy 500 at 2/3ds the price of a Remington. (It pays for the "goodies" you might want to add).

That's my 2 cents.

Well Ikor is working on the duct tape mount just needs a little work. We have to do something with all that tape we bought to protect us from chemical attacks.

I just don't get it. Why would you want a huge knife sticking out from the front of your shotgun when looking for things that go bump in the night. MIKE.

Alright I have a related question.

I know nothing about bayonets but is there a "specific" bayo for the 590 or will anyone fit.

I have one on order and all this talk has gotten me interested.

By the way, I have found almost as many 500 accessories as I have 870 accessories. I prefer Mossbergs to rems, but I'm a cheapskate also. Quality is the same in my opinion.

1- Any Bayo that fits the Ar-15/M-16 (m7 or m9 bayonets) will fit the 590.

2- Call me crazy, but I can most definitly see a use for a bayonet on a home defense gun. The use is 'intimidation'. It would be very handy to keep a perp at bay and subdued while the Police arrive, without having to dirty up your walls/floors/ceilings with blood/brains/guts. And yes a knife on a stick actually has a psychological intimidation factor. Alot of people that will 'try' somebody with a gun will back down from someone with a knife on the end of a stick. In some ways knives (on or off a stick) are even more intimidating than guns.

With that being said, neither my 870, nor my 590, nor my 1100, are my 'home defense' weapon, that is a pre-ban bushie M4orgery with a surefire, and a bayo handy. If I had to choose a between a 870 or 590, it would be the 590.

Several years ago there was a news report that a grandfather was holding a large carving knife on a major holiday. Thanksgiving or Christmas I don't remember. His grandson ran into the knife impaling himself and died. There were many witnesses so foul play ways eliminated. The image of this has always stuck in my mind and probably make me anti-bayonet.

Also if I was a cop responding to a burglary call and saw someone holding a longarm with a bayonet I would more likely believe that the person was a perp and possibly a nutcase.

I think that 18" barrels are too long for entry or close combat. There is a good reason that 12 or 14 inch barrels are used. Too bad that they can't be purchased by citizens here in New York. The 18" shotgun and 16" rifle rule are hard and fast for all except on duty police officers.

As I have stated in the past I was an entry team leader for many years and conducted many dynamic entries. Close combat is just that, close combat. I like the pistol in close mostly for weapon retention. MIKE.

Now, now, Tommy, I am not the one that missed 4 or 5 times, hitting a bottle at 50 yards.
It took me ONE shot with that shotgun and the slug found it's mark!
