I saw a complete Argentinian 1911 slide/barrel at a gun show today for $150. The slide was chromed and someone had monkied with the barrel. The locking lugs appeared to have been filed so the tops were rounded or beveled looking. I passed on buying it because I wasn't sure if the thing was safe like that. What do you think? What was the guy trying to do with it and is that safe?

Who knows. That fact that you looked at it with such detail is a good thing. Let's say it was unsafe, would it be worth it after getting a barrel stripping the chrome and probably finding other hidden problems? You did good and walked away.

It sounds like a bubba barrel job.  Probably best that you didn't buy it.

If one has the tools/skills, welding up and re-cutting lugs isn't really a big deal.

A SLIGHT bevel isn't a big deal, it's been done for a long time. How tight was the barrel in the slide notches?
