I'm a newbie with the 1911 style pistols. I came across a used Colt 1991A1 at my shop that I thought would be a nice project gun. It had some surface rust that wiped off with an oily rag.
Now I want to start changing things.  Anything I need to know, you want to share, or just plain tell me about my project, just let me know! Pictures will be coming shortly... |

Keep it simple.
No need for gas pedal safeties and surfboard slide stops. Just soften up the edges, bob the hammer and use some good internals if you need to. Wolff 18.5# recoil springs are an excellent step up from overly weak factory springs. A good set of sights is also a plus. I use the Robar G.I. rear sight, and a standard front. ETA: though I normally despide anything and everything extended for a 1911....I have one exception, the Ed Brown .060 extended mag release is awesome. They sometimes need fitted, though, as most good "add ons" will. |

I too have a Colt 1991A1 that I've had since 1998. I have not changed a damned thing and it's been great. Every time I thought about changing something, I thought again and found no need to.

Well, I guess I'll go the other way...
If you want to modify your gun, go for it. It's your gun and most of the fun of owning a gun like the 1911 is derived from the fact there are so many customization options out there and its easy to do it yourself (for the most part). So, while I love the idea of keeping a true 1911A1 as original as possible for historical purposes, if you want to change yours up, I see no reason not to. If I had the gun with the intention to change it, I'd start with sights, grips (I like the wrap around hogue grips) and maybe the hammer (so you have less chance for hammer bite). After that, the sky's the limit. |

I've got a 1991 that was from the first production year. I've had the ejection port lowered, a decent trigger job, an arched mainspring housing and an extended safety added.
My slide stop just broke though, could this have been caused by admittedly weak factory springs? |

I have a CQB that I purchased and just shoot. No need to play with anything on that one.
This one I bought with the intention of playing with it and learning about it. I paid 350 so it was bought as a fun gun...   |

Just light mods on mine, It's a minimalist 1911 and I feel no need to do anything else to it.

Oh yeah? Well mine's BIGGER!!!!  Nice SS 91. I USED to be able to find the 1991s for $350-450, now they get snatched up at $100 more then that to mod them. They are a GREAT deal for a starter 1911, especially if you can find them priced low. The ORM are a bit ugly but they are solid bare bones 1911s [yeah yeah, series 80s] |

Well, I've two of the things and love 'em. The ejection port and feed ramp are primarily all that's changed on my full size, but I spent more on customizing the Commander than the thing cost.
Roborized, tritium Novak, beavertailed, Videki trigger, edges smoothed, etc. Before  After

Thanks. Ebony I think, but I don't remember where I got them. The smooth part is really nice about halfway through one of those 2000 round days. The checkering is enough to keep a good grip without the blisters of the more aggressive styles. I'd have something like that on all my auto's if I could. |

Now for a question....
I really only want to change the trigger, hammer, and grip safety. Any part hints when I shop? Do I need to search for any specific terminology or just for anything for a full size pistol? Thanks! |

Back in my day Videki was the trigger manufacturer of choice. Unless something new has come along, I don't see any reason to buy anything else.
The rest I can't help you with - I regret changing my grip safety and think the beavertail is a bit much with a Commander hammer, but on a full size (for carry) I'd change either the hammer or the safety. I don't even remember the brand of grip safety I have on that thing. Sorry |

for the beaver tail to look right, it will have to be fitted, the drop in ones look wrong to me, same with the Novak sites. |

They do make a TiN series 80 kit that should lighten up that firing pin safety a bit. I have one in mine. I've had it so long, i don't remember what it was like without it. lol..
Other than that....might try an extended and threaded barrel, and a HEMS II.
