0000 steel wool and FLITZ
The Flitz will remove rust and polish the metal. You can use Flitz with a clean rag on blue steel and it'll remove rust without harming the blueing.

Steel wool will scratch the finish on the metal. Look at the area you scrubed through a loupe if you don't believe me.
If you're really particular about your finish, use bronze or brass wool and plenty of oil. They won't mar the metal or the finish (though they might leave brass or bronze residue that you'll have to remove). |

Except for a couple of models Kimber's barrels are carbon steel that is left in the white... they are pretty susceptible to oxidation if not kept with a thin coat of oil/grease on them.
If your barrel has "rusted" the easiest way to remove the rust and finish the barrel in one step is to put the barrel in a padded vice and use a strip of Scotch-Brite to "shoe-shine" the exterior of the barrel. You can pretty much get everywhere except the standing lugs and this will generally leave your barrel with a nice brushed finish. Some barrels with a heavier matte finish may require an application of 320 paper first. |
