External extractors are not bad things. S&W has it right on theirs. I've herd no problems with Dan Wesson either. It just isn't......................... 1911 ish.

My opinion on external extractors is simple.
If it works, I'm just as likely to buy one over as I am an internal model. Kimber however, did not design their extractor the way they should have. They clearly have issues with it. S&W and Dan Wesson seem to get it right. If I look at getting another 1911 and either of the styles I am looking at are produced by those companies, I certainly would not count them out for having an external. When done correctly, I think externals are just as good, if not better than an internal. I have no problem with them. Especially on a 1911 with a light rail and night sights, as well as other "modern" additions. |

SW and DW pretty much has cracked the code for the external extractors for 1911s. If SW dropped that 'Schwartz' safety in favor of a series 80/70 setup, I'd buy one in a heartbeat...D

I have been very happy with the external extractor on the SW 1911 that I have owned. My 1911Sc has been the most reliable 1911 that I have ever owned, however, I will admit that most of my 1911s have been reliable.

Because the 1911 that HK was thinking about making had one? And LAV worked for them? It now appears that he was assisting the design of the 416 instead of the 1911. |

I have the external DW CBOB, also have a internal DW PMA-B, both work great. I perfer the internal, purist I guess

I have a TLE RL 11, with external, and a CDP ULTRA 11, with internal, no problems with either.

one part vs. 2, more places for dirt to get caught, no way to field tune.

If God had meant for the 1911 to have an external extractor, he would have included it on the schematics he gave to the prophet, John Moses Browning.

From what I've read that other manufacturers use external because it's cheaper. Plus you don't need to tune anything, you just throw in a spring.

Exactly. Instead of using a good grade of steel and having a professional tune the extractor, they MIM (Kimber does at least) some steel powder into an extractor and some dude who got hired last week sticks it in the pistol with a spring. |

If you need to "field tune" your extractor, you likely have worse problems than field tuning your extractor.

I know a lot of the IPSC shooters swear by AFTEC extractors for their 1911/2011 pistols. My STI extractor broke at 400 rounds and I bought an AFTEC to replace it. They are spendy ($60+) but it has worked perfectly since installation. The replacement I got from STI is now in the range bag as a spare...
