I'm a Glock carrier,  but I really like 1911's.
I picked up a Griffon 1911a1  a few weeks ago,  and I can't figure out how to get it apart.
Two gunsmiths I visited tried the standard, push in recoil rod, rotate barrel locking lug,  but if does not work.  It's a one piece rod,  and does not push in,  so the locking plate does not clear it to rotate.
Please don't lecture about I should have bought something else,  it's had a -lot- of ammo pushed through it,  and has very little wear showing, (from what I can see).  It's solid,  and it's accurate.
I really just want to get it apart, inspect it, clean it, and replace any worn parts.
I've been told that there are Colts that are built the same way,  but so far no one has any idea how to take it down??  Any idea's?

The 2 gunsmiths you visited must not understand 1911's. Your 1911 has a full length recoil spring guide rod. The barrel bushing will not rotate with 1 piece guide rods.

You have to make sure the pistol is empty with the magazine out and then pull the slide to the rear. When you pill about 1/2 way back you will see a 'slot' on the slide that will line up with the rear of the slide stop. You then push the slide stop from right to left and out of the gun.

Then carefully ease the slide forward off of the frame. You can now remove the 1 piece guide rod from the slide by pulling up and to the rear. The barrel bushing will now rortate and come out. Pull the barrel to the front and remove the barrel from the slide.

Not very hard. Even a Marine can both do and understand it. Charles the Gunsmith.  

Thanks a bunch,  I think I agree about the 'smith's I visited.
One of them seemed to have an idea about the slide stop,  but was still trying to get the barrel bushing off first.
I'm currently north and the Grif is south,  but tomorrow,  I'll pull it out of the safe and give it a try.
