I have crappy Colt mags and I want to get some good mags for my Combat Commander. I am going to use them for carry and competition. I've heard good things about Wilson and Chip McCormick but what should I get. And more importantly where can I get them cheap? Thanks.

I'm a huge fan of WC47D mags, but as far as cheap? $19-23 is what I've paid, but since I've replaced ALL 17 springs and followers over the past 2 years under warranty, I really don't care what the mags cost.

I like my Colt commander mags

Honestly though...Ive heard nothing but good things about the 47D mags.....for the most part when it comes to mags you get what you pay for.

Mec-gar are pretty decent from what I've heard as well.

CDNN Investments is selling the CMC Power Mags for $8.99 each right now.  Shipping is a flat $10.00 regardless of quantity.

I only buy Wilson Combat 47D's.  As far as cheap; I've never seen them for less than $20.

I just picked up 2 Wilson 47D mags for $27.99 a piece. It doesnt really bother me that I paid about $5 too much per mag. This is one of those things that you NEED as opposed to a WANT. I used them for my range session today and saw immediate improvement. I would have 1-3 rounds out of evey 100 fail to feed with my Colt mags....used the 47D mags for 300 rounds of test fire...had no failures.

I have had excellent results with CMC Power Mags in steel framed autos.  I have a dozen or so of them and I can't recall ever having problems with them.

I bought Wilson 47Ds for my alloy framed 1911s and I have had good luck with them as well.  The plastic follower doesn't gouge the alloy frame like the CMC's steel follower tends to do.  One thing I did notice is that the 7 round Wilsons don't always engage the slide lock in certain guns.  But now I have more Wilsons than CMCs, and probably will buy them exclusively from now on.

check midway....they had wilsons for 22 or 23 dollars......if they still do?......i did buy a couple of the cdnn 899 mags.....havn`t used them yet...but they are identical to the shooting stars....usually...the colt mags are fine.....but i did see some cheapo takeoffs that were so damn thin i wouldn`t use them.....actually bought one for like $8....but tossed it.....the baseplate was stamped "colt45"....but....no pony......hhmmm

Just picked up 3 Chip McCormick mags from CDNN. We'll see how they work when they show up. Thanks for all the advice guys.

I talked myself into ordering ten of the CDNN mags.

To follow up, I got the ten mags I ordered from CDNN awhile back.  All ten are identical to the current Power Mag but lack the Chip McCormick markings.  I have run rounds through all ten mags and they feed, lock the slide open, etc.  So far so good!  These seem to be the best deal around on a decent 1911 mag.  Cost for 10 mags delivered was $100.00.

Metalform are okay for general use. They work, but they are not the greatest.

I really like Wilson 47D mags, but I keep them full of JHP, and dont use them for range blasting. They are also a little expensive.

Mec-gar 7rd mags are sweet! I really like to use them at the range as they are very easy to load, they insert into the pistol smoothly, and feed rounds easily. They are all around slick magazines. Sometimes you will get a bad one that wont feed right, but you will know if it is bad the first time to the range. Otherwise, they are very reliable and function great.

Stay away from the crappy no-name 7rd mags that go for about $5-7 at gunshows and on the .net. You can get some that work... for a while. The follower tab gets chewed up by the slide stop and before long the floorplate will break its crappy spotwelds and the spring, follower and several rounds of .45acp will shoot out the bottom and end up all over the shooting bench.

Do the 8 round W-47 mags bulge out of the mag well much more than the 7 round mags they make?  I see both for sale and the 8 round mag is actually a few dollars les...

Most 1911 failures are due to mag problems- don't go cheap!!!!
I got some of the cobra mags from tripp research, not cheap but they are the best mags out there I think.

I've found my Novak mags hold their spring life better than Wilson's when left fully loaded over time.

CDNN has em for $14.99 www.cdnninvestments.com/19458rdblmaw.html

Has anybody else had Novak mags crack?  I had half a dozen or so and they all cracked along one feedlip or the other over time.  And it wasn't a long time, either.  I think the oldest mag was 6-8 months old.

Haven't had that happen yet but I'll keep an eye on em.
I've also had good luck with Pachmyr 7rd mags. Have 4 of them that have been perfect. Sadly I can't find em anymore.

So what is a good price?

Ive gotten ChipMcCormicks for 12bux, I picked up some WC 47Ds for 19bux on the EE & I can get them right now for $20.12 per else where (good price?). Ive had good luck with both these mags, the 47Ds seem smoother and I like the extended base plate for 3gun type shooting.
