SGB, in a previous post about this pistol you mentioned changing out the mainspring for a heavier one. What number of spring should I get? and which manufacturer is preferred? Will it hurt the gun of I run a couple mags of 230 ball through it before the spring gets here? Thanks in advance.

A couple of mags won't hurt, but continued use of full power ammo without changing out the springs will beat it to death. Standart Government Model 1911s come with a 23lb mainspring and a 16lb recoil spring. The Gold Cup comes with a 19lb mainspring and a 15lb recoil spring AS WELL AS HAVING A LIGHTER WEIGHT SLIDE. It was designed for reuced target loads after all.  Change out the MAINSPRING to the a standard Wolf 23lb and the recoil spring I would suggest a Wolf 20lb variable rate spring, to compensate. This combination has worked very well in my Gold Cup which gets a steady diet of full power Ball. |

Is the mainspring also called a hammerspring? I cant find a mainspring anywhere on the brownells website, but I did find the variable rate recoil spring on there.

+2 It DOES get into the blood! I bought an old war surplus Ithica (Ronald Reagan let 'em back from China... God bless him!) and smithed it into good shootin' shape. It is my primary defense gun... NEVER a misfeed, FTF, FTE, etc. I have had more jam-ups with my Smith & Wesson Model 27 than with my .45! AND it digests EVERYthing I feed it (as long as it says .45 on it... it doesn't like 9mm for some reason). [sarcasm OFF] My second was inherited from my dad... who got it from a friend who apparently (he tells everyone) enhanced his paycheck by dipping into the company's coffers... did some felony time and therefore my dad got it. I call it Lucrezia Borgia... beautiful on the outside, ugly on the inside... very amateurish work done on it inside... but it shoots reliably and I've had it checked out by a gunsmith. Very nice gun! If scratches are the sort of thing which bothers you, there are a multitude of refinishers out there ready to help. Personally, the story which came with the gun is cool. My first semi-auto (early 90's) was a brand new S&W 4006. It had been scratched when a gunshop burglar broke the display case and the heavy glass fell onto several guns. I got a nice discount for the "damage" and never let it bother me.
