OK ladies and gents, here are the options. I'm looking at two 1911's right now, and can only afford one.

One is a used Springfield GI model stamped "US" on the grips, you probably all know the kind. Slight wear on the slide from a fobus holster and slight wear on the grip safety. Seems to function fine; comes with the above-mentioned holster. $379

The other is also used, a Federal Ordinance .45 with a beaver tail on the grip safety and hogue grip. Needs cleaning, but also seems to function well. Gun shop owner of this one said that it shoots well, and that he was impressed with it. Of course he did, I know, but he's never led me astray before. This one's $349

Advice?

AVOID federal ordnance...... it's a parts gun most likely and the Fed Ord frames rank with the old essex in quality. Spotty at best

Get the SA GI. Good base 1911 with a lifetime warranty.

at that price range, get a glock instead

not being neg. just that, you deserve a kick ass 1911

then you would love it and understand why you saved a little more money before buying

love my .40 glocks in that price range

love my $800-1200 1911's even more

there's def. deals out there, but skip the ~~ruger 9mms,~~$400 1911s~~, tec 9's, etc~~

I'd rather have one kick ass gun, than 6 mediocre guns

The SA is a great gun for that price. You will be happy with it. ChopperBob, the 9mm ruger P95 is a good gun also.

One of my favorite guns is my SA GI model. It's got over 2K rounds through it and hasnt hiccupped a single time. You cant go wrong with it. I'm leaving mine bone stock. It's a great shooter out of the box. Even with the speedbump sights and stock grip safety it's a joy to shoot.

Well I already have a Glock 22 so there seems to be litttle use in buying another one. I shot my friend's stock 1911 and did better with that than I ever have with my Glock. And I did a LOT better with my other friend's $1100 Kimber. Thanks for the advice folks.

Run fast and far.

If you luck out and get one that has no major problems, you will still have a gun with resale value slightly greater than a dried up cat turd.

I dont have any experience with the Federal Ordnance, but the two Springfields I've shot (GI model and Mil Spec model) were good guns. Out of the two I would definitely go with the Springfield.

If I were you, I would look for a Springfield Milspec for a little more money. Sights on the Milspec are way easier to see compared to the GI.

In that price range, see if you can find a Norinco 1911.

SA over no-name anyday.
I'm a Kimber guy myself, but 379 for an SA is a good deal. Go for it.

It is a Kobra and I love it. My wife orderd it for me for Xmas.

If the shop has a range, see if he'll let you try out the no name gun.
If it functions on the range (no failures) and shoots good, I'd make him an offer.
