MecGars are the shiznit, I think....and they are very reasonably priced. I've never used one, in any of my 1911's that gave me one bit of trouble and I own 20 or more.

Wilson 47D and replace the slide stop with a Wilson "bulletproof". While you're at it also install a wilson "bulletproof" extractor.

Of course they're not, they don't cost as much.  Seriously, CMC's, Wilsons, MecGars, all are fine mags and chances are slim you'll get a bad one. Really just comes down to preference....or if you have some hopped up turd of a gun that won't run on anything but a certain brand (seen a few guns like that), but that's hardly a reason to claim one magazine company is the best. I've run mags from all those brands in my good 1911, and never had a single problem, ever. |

I've never had a split follower McCormick (shooting star) mag that would reliably lock the slide open on the last shot. Even my Colt 8 round mags have the damned shooting star follower and are range only mags. |

I own three 1911's: a colt delta series, a wilson and a rock island which is the cheapest gun around, but a great gun despite the price.
NOVAK'S 8 round magazines made by Act-Mag in Italy reliably fit all guns and have never caused me a problem in 4,000 rounds and counting. just my two cents |

The only 8 round mag I would even look into is the Novak/ACT mag. I am not recomending it yet. I own one, but have not shot it yet. Unlike the Wilson and the CMC the mag body is actually longer to accomadate the extra round. I own several 47D's and CMC powermags. When they are fully loaded they take much more effort to seat in the gun than a 7 rounder. That also means that the fully loaded 8 round mag is applying more pressure/friction to the bottom of the slide. That will have an effect on slide velocity under recoil. That is not my opinion, just physics. That is not something I want to worry about in a defense situation. I have also had failures to fully engage the slide stop with the Wilson plastic follower. I still use them at the range, but I would not trust them to carry.
I carry Colt 7 round mags. |

I use 8rd CMC shooting stars in all my 45's ( stock , Hardball & Bullseye ) and have never had problems; They are most excellent wadcutter mags.
 They are also inexpensive at pretty much half the cost or < than Wilson'$

+1 CMC mags have worked better for me than Wilson mags have. Several different mags in several different guns. Never had a problem. |

Shooting Stars, with the stock dimple follower. I know it makes it a 7 rounder. But ultra reliable mag.

IIRC, Wilsons are also safe to use in lightweight (aluminum) framed guns. The others (used to?) damage the frame sometimes, because the steel follower would hit the frame sometimes and eventually wear it down some.
I don't know if this is still an issue, or whatever, though. |

Are you sure that replaceing the slide stop with a Wilson's will solve my problem? I've heard a few other guys on here with TRP's have tried many different slide stops and still had problems. Also what Wilson extractor do I get (415,80?) Thanks for your input guys.

Doesn't matter what brand 1911 I use, WILSON mags are the only ones I trust my life with. All other mags are just range mags to me.

McCormick Power Mags all day long. I have a couple of Wilsons that I use at the range for IDPA but my carry gun gets Powermags and when I buy new ones that's all I buy. I have about 16 Powermags that I use for IDPA and none of them have given me any problems. The Wilsons have had issues several times. Plast wears, metal doesn't.
At the end of the day though it's all about personal preference. I can get the Powermags for $17.50 from Brownells and the Wilsons for $20.12. I can get 11 Powermags for the price of 10 Wilsons. |

Can you explain this comment? I don't see the harm here. I'd rather the $.50 follower wear than the $20 mag or the $900 gun. If you have a reason, this is bad, I'd be very interested to know. Thanks. Oh and BTW, I use the CMC's in my .38 Supers. Love 'em!! |

I don't own any aluminium frame 1911s for the same reason I don't own any plastic follower 1911 magazines. (that is a joke...kind of) The only problems I have had with the plastic follower is when they get worn on the slide stop engagement ledge they have failed to lift the slide stop on an empty mag. That may not be big deal to some but I will not tolerate it because I do not have to. My gripe with 8 rounders in general is that we have stretched the design a little to far to try to cram 8 rounds into and area designed for 7. Yes it can be done, but should it? I often see people on fourms talking about schedules for replacing their mag springs or rotating their carry mags in an effort to prevent spring fatigue. This is because we have tried to cram a lot of spring into a very tiny space. I fear some of these springs are on the verge of being overstressed. The best approach I have seen is the Novak mag. The body is actually longer, so there is more room for the spring in full compression. I have also heard of 47s spreading at the feed lips. (I have not personally experienced this) I assume this is from the very high spring load generated by the super compressed spring. That high spring load is also what makes a fully loaded 8 rounder harder to fully insert than a 7 rounder.(I have experienced this) |

I'm replacing my mag springs and followers with Wilson kits which will also reduce my mags to seven rounds. From advice and experience, I find this to be the best for me. can't recommend any particular brand. YMMV
