My $.02...
I see lots of guys building and buying "icons", but very few building serious duty-ready 1911's. 3-4in. accuracy at 50 yards means pretty much nothing compared to absolute reliability at 50 inches when some asswipe is trying his best to put holes in you. Beautiful bluing will get scratched, dinged, gouged and rust spotted after a while in spite of your best efforts...at least if you live in the southeastern U.S. humidity. Sharp corners will rip your hands, arms and seat cushions, etc. etc. etc.
I carried the 1911 on duty for probably 10+ years on and off out of 30. My last duty 1911 was a standard Series I Kimber with a stippled front strap, tritium front blade, 5lb. trigger, GI guide rod set up and a steel mainspring housing, all coated with BlackT by Walter Birdsong. I should have kept it, but sold it to a young SWAT officer who is still carrying it every day right now...it still works just fine.
I have a Warrior and so far I like it. but I have exactly 100rd. through it, so that means very little since I do not carry it. It would cost about $100-150 to replace the MIM stuff and that still puts it in the park at or around $1200 if you shop the new gun hard. OTOH, I know several guys whose opinions I respect who do carry Wilson production guns every day, and none has anything bad to say about them.
If I were building another non-railed duty 1911, I would start with either a 70 Series Colt or a Series I Kimber and do just a few mods, then have it coated with something dark and very rust resistant. For one with a rail, I would use the Warrior. JMO
