I'm going to a 3 day Randy Cain class in a couple of weeks and will be taking my fullsize Kimber Series 1. So far I have two of the following (besides what's already in the gun):
Ed Brown pin set
spare firing pin
grip screws
grip screw bushings
sear spring

I'm running an ambi-safety but I have the original single-sided safety that I can drop in if the ambi fails. I also have a spare tuned extractor. I'm also a mag whore so I have tons of those but will still probably order a couple more spares.

Can you think of anything else I should get before the class? Obviously anything that needs to be fit is out, but any other drop-in parts?

Having attended many classes and lots of pretty fair sized matches, I would say to make sure you take good cleaning gear, and clean and lube your pistol properly every night. I have lost track of the number of guys who had problems because they were just too lazy or tired to clean the weapon daily...not to mention the ones who swear that a "dirty pistol shoots better"!

I generally go 1000 rounds or so between cleanings (about 5 matches), but am planning on erring on the side of caution for the class.

Rather than worry about all those spare parts, why not just take a glock?

(note the winking smiley. don't get all emotional and such!)

I'm doing that too actually. I'll have a spare 1911 (Kimber Compact Aluminum) but I'll also have a Glock 19 with me. That reminds me I gotta go pick up some little bullets for the toy gun.

Might consider a firing pin stop, occasionally they will crack/break around the firing pin hole.

One other thing, if you don't mind the expense, is a slide stop. They do occasionally break. You gun will work, more than likely, with a broken ejector tip, cracked slide stop, etc. It won't work with a broken slide stop or extractor.

ETA: I did not post that to argue the point with skunkeye, since he is absolutely right. After reading it I thought it appeared I was being rather trollish. If you're going to be on the ultra safe side, having all these spare parts are nice. For the guy who mentioned just bringing a Glock, I've broken Glocks before too. As a matter of fact, I've broken more channel liners and spring cups in glocks than anything 1911 related. Again, I'm not trying to be arguementative, but all guns can break if used hard, and I think the guy who originally posted this is just one of those guys who plans ahead.

Adding both to the list now. Not sure if my FPS is fitted or not but won't hurt to have an extra.

How did we get this many replies before someone said "extractor"?

Extractor and Slide Stop are the two possibilities that are most likely, and will certainly shut the gun down.

The big question - will you have time to repair the weapon?

Still, fine idea to have some parts.

Will a new extractor, say for example a Wilson Bullet Proof Extractor, generally work right out of the bag. Or, will it need to be tweaked by a gunsmith?

YOu will likely need to adjust it - but you can do that yourself.
