In my quest for 1911's around $700 I've come up with either the Ruger SR1911 Commander or the Springfield Range Officer. Now, I've had both of these guns before and liked them. The Ruger is just a sexy gun and it shot great, but its not as smooth and tight fitting as the RO I had.

So I'm going to order a RO tomorrow, LGS said that either the 9mm or .45 would be around $730. The one I had las was a .45 and I am leaning towards this one because, well, murica. I feel a 1911 in .45 is just "right".

HOWEVER, I can see the advantages of having one in 9mm. Higher capacity, lower recoil, cheaper ammo. This gun will be used for target shooting and HD. Wont really see any carry use unless I'm hunting and need a sidearm.

Have any of you gone through this decision? The local ammo supplier has 9mm for $10.99 and .45 for $16.99. Thats significant enough to make me think about it.

I would like to have a 9mm 1911 when play funds ever justify one.
If you don't have a 45, that is the answer. Usually 45's function quite a bit better than 1911's in 9mm. I do prefer my 1911's in 45 though.

A 1911 in any caliber other than .45 doesn't interest me at all.

Thats too bad.  Its a fine platform for any caliber.

Most people won't believe how much fun a 1911 in 9mm can be.  Get the 9mm.   I have a NM loaded stainless in 9mm and one in 45 too.  
You can shoot the 9mm all day and not get fatigue in the hands.  

I almost snatched a 9mm 1911 up this weekend.

What held me back is having a closet full of .45 mags and no 9mm mags .

One day when I have a little more free money Ill have to make the jump so I can continue to shoot.

If you can get the 9MM R.O. for $730, you better jump on it. They go for $890 here. They have a ramped bull barrel and are some of the most accurate 1911's you can buy.

The 9MM RO around here last time I checked was $869 might be a little better deal for you, but yet its hard to pass on the classic 45.

There are some advantages to the Springfield 1911 RO in 9mm caliber that come to mind...

Higher magazine capacity (10+1 w/ Wilson Combat mags).
+P+ 9mm ammo capable.
Lower felt recoil vs. .45 ACP.
Increased accuracy/hit probability vs. .45 ACP, etc .
Lower cost of ammo and cheaper to reload.

After working on and converting many 1911's to 9mm NATO from the original .45 ACP caliber,
1911's in 9mm NATO (IMHO) are accurate, easy to shoot, and reliable...It also helps Introduce
Women, Seniors, and younger folks to a major round/caliber...

When you master a 1911 in 45acp, you won't want it in any other caliber. I have shot them all. And owned most.
Sold them all except the 45's.

While I am quite fond of .45acp in the 1911 platform, and shoot it more than quite well, even "mastered" it, if you will , I have a RO in 9mm, and it is extremely accurate, and quite fun to shoot.
