Alright so my dad offered to get me a Rock Island 1911-A1 (from Buds) for Christmas or I could use the $330 towards a new optic for my modified Remington 700 AAC-SD.

I don't currently have any 1911s (or any pistol chambered in .45) so obviously I'd have to drop some $$$ on ammo and some mags.

Do you think I should break into the 1911 game and if so is the RIA 1911-A1 a good quality pistol?

Go for the 1911 IMHO.

Put up a poll and I think you'd figure out ARFCOM's opinion pretty quick.

Pole added. Mainly I'm just trying to find out if the RIA is a quality 1911 since it's so cheap.

I went out on a limb two years age and bought a citadel 1911 ..4 in compact. It came with flared ejection port , extended beaver tail, skeletonized trigger and hammer. ( made by armscorps whom produces rock island line) it is my every daycarry gun fires and operates flawlessly. I put pierce wraparound rubber grips and I love them. The gun has some weight to it but is a solid carry gun that I trust with my life. Armscorp makes some awesome products as of late. Just my 2 cents.. hope it helps

The Rock Island pistols are a lot of value for their price.  It won't be a finely finished match gun, but it'll do what a 1911 was designed to do.  They are a great way to break into 1911's on a budget.
Buy good mags and learn to lube it.  You'll have a blast!

So I just read that you cannot swap the sights on the A1 for modern type dovetail sights without a lot of hasle...looks like I'm going to just take the $ and put it towards a new optic.

I'll hold out on a 1911 and hopefully the "Tactical" model is put up on sale for $349.99 again.

My second handgun was a RIA Tactical in 9mm. I put about 1000 rounds including Tula, Wolf, reloads, from all weights to all bullet types. Never had a malfunction and it became my first CCW. Sold it for a Remington 700 AAC.

I miss it and if I could buy a 1911 again I would have no problem with the RIA.

Get the optic.

Here's my theory: It's easier to get GAS and walk out of a gun store with a new weapon on impulse than it is with an optic. It just happens. A lot. For me anyway. Not so much with glass. So you end up with both. Problem solved.

Get the optic as a present cause you know if you know you want the 1911, you'll get it anyway down the road. If you are like me that is.

Ill take a $300 RIA 1911 over a $300 optic any day.   My RIA is a great shooter.

It wouldn't be a $300 optic...it would be $300 towards a $1,500 SWFA 5-20 HD

And I wanted the tactical RIA but kygunco.com sold out today so I'm still on the hunt.
