Sarco usually has them in shotgunnews, as does Federal Arms co.  Federal Arms has a website, but I can't remember what it is and can't search for it right now- office firewall

As for building your own 1911, unless you're a machinist, I wouldn't attempt it.

why do you say that bob?i graduated from the colorado school of trades about 12yrs ago but i havent worked in a gunsmith shop in about 8 years.i work offshore making twice what i went to school for(gunsmithing)so i may be a little rusty but i think i can handle it.do these kits require alot of fitting?thanx bently

I personally know several people who are non-smiths that have built a 1911 from a parts kit.  It's not difficult, just takes an understanding of the pistols operation.  Some parts require minor fitting, but if you educate yourself, it's not hard at all.

mrw if the darkside is owning an ak im already there i love my ak.my current gun collection is as follows....hkg3,ar15,ak47,german mauser,benelli nova,marlin 17v,ruger10/22bull barrel,tauras pt111and last but not least my cz70 pocket gun.but what this collection is missing is a .45 and what better .45 to have than a 1911 wouldnt you agree?my fiance doesnt think so but what does she know.she says i dont need another gun.and shes right i dont neeed another gun but i want a .45.lol.later Bently

Speaking as something of a 1911 freak and one who is married to a 1911 specialist I would caution you that building a truly workable 1911 is not that easy. There are lots of parts you will need and they are all not "drop in" as advertized.

One of the first things you will have to do is the frame to slide fit. That requires lapping the slide till it moves freely along the frame. You want a free sliding slide but not so that it has much other movement, no rattles. Then comes fitting the barrel to the slide which is where you can really mess up the whole deal. BTW, are you planning on a ramped barrel or regular?
