.45ACP is an old-style cartridge... It will go OK with 7.62NATO or .30-06... Big, heavy...
5.56mm is a modern cartridge... Slim, fast... 9mm Parabellum compliments it well. Glock, XD, (whatever Beretta is calling the M9 this week), PX4 Storm, etc. would all match up nicely. |

the problem with 9 mm's are they are "baby bullets". I often think of the joke phrase,"he is such an idiot he would bring a 9 mm to a gunfight". Get yourself any of the great .45 ACP pistols out there now and have the perfect and effective compliment to your AR....<><....:).

While 1911's are nice, I just don't care for them. I've got an HK that I'm happy with, and some glocks. I shot a sig the other weekend, kind of made me think about trying out a P220, maybe throw a suppressor on.

In actuality a 1911 is the Colt of handguns. :)
Anyhow, as a companion for an AR I would think you are looking at a full size service auto, either .45acp or 9mm. I personally love the 1911 trigger but (despite probable flamage) would not use one as a transition sidearm. So, that said, for .45acp: SIG P220, FN45, HK45, CZ97B 9mm: P229, Beretta 92f, CZ75B (my pref), or Glock These encompass a set of what I would consider likely and standard. I prefer a CZ 75 in 9mm. Just my thing. |

Great options for a side arm
or you can get a wheel gun in 45 acp if thats your preference 1911- Kimber, Wilson, Colt series 70 or older, springfield operators Glock- I don't care for glocks much but try one see if you like it if you decide to look beyond45 acp to 9mm which I recommend Beretta 92 Walther-P99 my favorite Sig Browning Hi Power- 2nd favorite all 357 magnum-S&W -19, 66, 686, 586, 620, TRR8 |

i love my Colt, but to compliment my AR i went with HK USP in .45acp.
yeah, yeah... .45 is an outdated cartridge, whatever. who says i'm packing ball? 230 grain +p ranger t series FTW. |

If the OPERATOR of the 9mm firearm is up to it, it is more than enough cartridge. With that said, I carry a .40S&W, which is "way more than enough cartridge."

after about 300 rounds through my glock 21 i've had no misfires, no FTE, it has 13 round capacity, which is a lot for .45, and lots of accessories. i absolutely trust my life with it. as for accuracy, i outshot people at my permit class using .22's. now i KNOW that that is just pitiful on the part of the people behind them, but still, i had very little practice with it at this point, around 50-60 shots before class. we were only required to get 35 hits overall, so i screwed around on the last 15. out of 50 shots, 35 torso hits inside only the 4 and 5 circles and 13 head shots. i missed 2 of the headshots by an inch each. distance was 15 yd. btw. we were SUPPOSED to do 3,9, and 15, but due to bad weather we only did 15. i swear, some of the people using the .22's looked like they had brought a 10/22 carbine with a norrell trigger kit. scary

i got a .45 for my full size, just my preference. i go into the woods a lot, so humans aren't the only thing i worry about having to shoot. as for the 9mm, i am currently looking hard at a glock 26 for a backup. less recoil than the .45 and PLENTY of stopping power should you need it. does a .45 do better, yes, but 9mm have slightly longer range and will still easily do the job when placed correctly. also, 9mm can be had almost anywhere in the world, .45 is mainly a US thing i believe.

I have to agree. While I feel the 1911 is the traditional compliment to the AR, I just haven't found one yet that feels right in my hand. For this reason the full-size USP45 loaded with 230gr Rangers is my choice as well:

As you can see in the above painting, which was believed to be 2000 years old by the most advanced carbon dating methods, Jesus is seen with his 1911 in his hand and AR by his side. Keep in mind, back when Jesus was an "operator", they didnt have all the tacticool accessories they do nowadays which is why he is wearing a robe instead of tactical gear, and note they did not have rails for mounting lights back then, but the best pistol back then is the same as it is now. Everybodies got their own opinion. I use Glock pistols myself. A G-26 for carry, and a G-17 . I dont intend to get involved in a 1911 VS Glock flame war, use what suits you.

The ideal handgun companion to the AR-15 would be one utilizing polymer, steel and aluminum in it's construction and incorporating innovative action and safety systems along with high capacity in .45ACP. Hence, my personal choice, the Taurus 24/7 Pro. The 1911 is a fine pistol, and I have several, but this is my go-to.

The most important thing in picking your sidearm is how the grip fits your hand, so I agree with others here to try it yourself first at the range.
I use different brands of pistols but my favorite that fits my hand the best are my Sig P226 9mm and Sig P220 .45 ACP. I actually have more trigger time and competed more with pistols in NRA/ USPSA-IPSC in the '70s and '80s. My other sidearms that I use are Colt 1911 .45 with Wilson Combat compensator-barrel, Colt 1911 stainless, Colt 1911 Combat Gov't model, HK USP, Colt compact lightweight 1911, Glock 19. |

If there are two pistols any gun owner/collector needs to have in their collection they are a 1911 style pistol and a 9mm Glock (17 or 19 preferably).

I own a Beretta 92FS and would love a 1911 too. I loved shooting the Springfield XD, fantastic accuracy. Pretty comfy with the S&W M&P too. Prefer metal frames but polys have their place. Would love to try out a PX4 and a 90-Two. Have shot a Sig P225 and liked it but it cost a bit more than I wanted to spend. Loved the 92FS Police trade in at about $400.

Just bought myself a 92FS yesterday for this very reason. I'm a big fan of .45ACP but a big framed 9mm is faster at re-acquiring and more accurate when "rapid" firing... IMO. True, the 45ACP has more stopping power but I like speed and rapid target acquision. The placement of the shot will take care of the rest.

This kind of question is a no win situation just like Ford-Chevy debates. The Beretta M92 would appear to be a good choice since it's Uncle Sams' choice, but many in the sand box acquire a 1911 as soon as possible. I personally so not like Glocks, but I would rather my friends be armed with a Glock than not armed at all. As several have said, try out several pisto;ls and find out what fits your needs and budget the best.
