Now that I have this, I may have to buy a Government Model Pistol. Any suggestions for a reasonably priced pistol. The pistol would be just for having fun at the range. Basically a GM .45 under $500.

Springfield Mil-spec (park. or SS) would fit the bill.  Also makes a great platform for mods.

The new Springfield WWII model goes for less than $400 in some places or the regular mil-spec is sub $500 with better sights...

I just paid $500 for this with 2 colt mags, it's run perfectly so far, I've put about 200 rounds through it.

Three votes for the Springfield so far and one Colt.

cduarte, was the pistol new when you bought it?

no, but it had some nice custom work done/parts added including trijicon night sights on it, the trigger is perfect, and it is very accurate. This is the "enhanced" model, and is discontinued.

Got the Springfield 1911 style for $425. You can hardly beat that. But then a friend wanted to unload his Ruger P90 for $200 so now I have a couple of .45s. <shrug>

I think Quantico has a Springfield Loaded compact 1911 with night sights for something like $649.

Not sure they have any more, but it's still on the website.

Just use some +P's, to make up the lost velocity from the 4.25" barrel and be a happy happy camper...

I have been doing a little looking around on the net and I do like the looks of the Springfield.

I don't think I can bring myself to buy a new Colt. I might be able to convince myself into buying one from an individual though.

I plan on doing a little more research at the next gunshow.

Everybody bashes them but I love all my Colts.

My Auto Ordinance runs like a champ. I had some issues at first, but the company took care of them for me. Now it shoots everything. It gets better every trip to the range.

Another vote for the SA 1911A1. Added military surplus walnut grips, SS grip screws and a full length guide rod (about $18 from Dillon Precision or DPMS/Panther). Got me a real fine shootin' iron now.
