For years I bought whatever gun caught my fancy regardless of caliber, providing of course that reloading components weren't too difficult to obtain. If memory serves I had about 16 different calibers at one time. In the last couple of years I have downsized my collection to just a few calibers and don't really have a desire to own any thing outside the calibers I already reload for.
ETA. Former calibers; .41 mag. .44mag .45Colt. .40S&W. .357mag. .303British. .30-40Krag. 7.62x39mm. 45-70. .30-06. .308 and a few others. Current calibers; 9mm. .45acp. .223. 7x57Mauser. 7.62x54R and of course .22LR. |

Early on I owned several calibers , but have since narrowed it down.
12g , 9mm , .45 , .38, .22lr and of course .223/5.56. I have culled .40 , .32 , .357 and haven't looked back since. Although I do still own a .40 Glock converted to 9mm. I may be adding a big bore handgun in a revolver , but undecided till I find a screaming deal. -JC |

So far, I've chosen common, easy to find chamberings (.22 LR, 45 ACP and soon 9mm in handguns and .22 LR and .223/5.56x45 in rifles). YMMV

Having a C&R makes caliber consolidation really hard. Plus, having only a few calibers gets boring.

Life is too short to worry about trying to keep a small list of calibers. I buy whatever I want in whichever caliber.

22LR 9mm 45APC 223 7.62x39 30-06 what I'm considering adding 308 12ga 38spl and/or 357 Reason, I can't afford to stock a shit load of calibers...I barely can afford to shoot now with the price of ammo going up. |

Primary focus: 22LR Secondary: 9mm/CZ and clones Third: 45acp. |

maybe. but those are my main focus. i have dies and guns for rifle; 223, 30 carb, 30-30, 7.62 x39, 308, 30-06, pistol: 9mm, 357mag, 10mm, 44mag, 45acp, 45LC, 475/500 Linbaugh. also, if you dont know that almost every gun mfg in the world had made a 22LR.  i dont expect to finsh my 22 collection. its just something that i like and half the fun is in the "pursuit"

I try to keep my calibers easy to find.
22lr, 9mm, .40, 45ACP, .223/5.56, 12ga, 308. Anywhere I go, there's bound to be those calibers whether it be Wal Mart or a specialty gun store anywhere in the country. I'm considering culling the .40, but I doubt it, as my Glocks are chambered for it. I can't imagine going into a store on vacation in the back country these days trying to find 45 GAP or 38 Super. |

Also put me in the "used to buy whatever, but have narrowed it down over the years" category for modern stuff, although I don't really count old milsurp. 9mm, .45ACP, .223, .308, 12ga, or (of course) .22lr and that's it for me. It really seems to be a common theme amongst those I know... So it might be beneficial to nip it in the bud early...

I get queezy when I don't have 1,000 rounds on hand of any particular caliber I own a firearm chambered in.
 This has kept me away from some cartridges I've considered owning, such as .41 Magnum, 10mm Auto, 6.5x55, 7x57, .416 Rigby, etc.

I am trying to keep my handgun collection down to 22lr, 9mm and 45ACP because I have several cases of ammo those calibers. I also own a 25acp, two .380s six, 357s two 40 S&W, two 41Mags, and three 44Mags but I only have a few boxes of ammo for those guns.
 I really want a 10mm but I can't afford to buy cases of 10mm ammo. |

I don't consolidate calibers and have no desire to, though I do avoid some calibers when guns are available in multiple different calibers and I do tend to stick to platforms designed for favorite calibers. For instance, you can buy just about any gun chambered for .40 S&W and/or .357 Sig in 9mm. I only buy the 9mm versions.

I like having a bunch of different choices in weapons and rounds. I do try to stay away from some of the less used rounds though. The 6.8 spc is one of the rarer rounds I have a weapon chambered for but that is now offered by a lot of companies. I don't think I would be interested in the 6.5 of the .458 though as they really are a little too rare. As far as pistols go I have ones chambered in 9mm, 357 mag, 40sw, and 45acp. I plan on picking up a 10mm and a smith 460 at some point as well(as the 460 will shoot 454 and 45). Also will pick up a 50ae at some point I'm sure. After that I really don't see myself going for any other rounds unless the 5.7 comes out in a better pistol then the current fiveseven. Just don't like that thing. I don't really have any interest in the 41mag, 44 mag, 357 sig or anything like that. Maybe a 44 mag if I got a good price on one. I really enjoy the collection of various types of pistols I'm collecting. I do only really stock larger amounts of ammo for the 9mm and the 40 though. |

I have a shooting buddy, he has well over 50 different calibers in various pistols, rifles, and shotguns. There have been a few times when he either didn't know if he had any ammo for X pistol/rifle, or didn't know where he put it. His gun room has an entire wall with shelves filled with boxes for every different caliber he owns. It's like going to the ammo counter at a funshop. He has even brought the wrong ammo for the gun he is shooting to the range a few times
I stock 9 calibers and that is more than enough. 22 (bulk packs and stingers/minimags) 223 (AR15... nothing more needed to be said) 308 (700P and soon to be built AR10) 40 (Glocks) 41mag (forgot about this one- keep minimal ammo) 38spl. (forgot this one too.... same as above) 45 (have ammo no current firearm... Kimber Warrior soon) 32 (Keltec P32 and I don't keep much ammo on hand for it.) 12ga (hunting, plinking, and home defense rounds for 3 different firearms) |

Since ammo is getting more and more expensive im sticking to my current calibers..
9mm 38 special 45ACP 357mag 223/556 22lr I have been wanting to build a nice remington700 in 308 but in the end i wont shoot it very much and with the price of ammo i dont think its rtealy worth it to me now... just bought a glock 26 though EDIT: almost forgot 12gauge too |

Just about all of my weapons are chambers in either .22LR, 9mm, 5.56MM or 12ga.
My only purposes for firearms are recreation and self defense. I find those 4 calibers handle all of my needs for those 2 purposes. I also have limited time and money so from a practical standpoint, I find having too many different types of weapons or calibers a waste of those resources. That said, I do have a S&W .357 revolver and a Colt 1911 style .45ACP mostly because IMO those 2 weapons are American classics that I just couldn’t live without but honestly, they don’t get used much and are pretty much safe queens. |

My prejudice runs to the .45acp and the majority of my handguns are in that caliber. Being practical I realize the other common calibers may be more proficient in a time of natural disaster of civil unrest so I have several 9mm and .38 special handguns as well.

You can by the same caliber for as long as you like, you will end up with alot of the same thing.
I attempted to do this long ago when my collection was just starting, but have discovered you just limit yourself to much. 7.62X25 is an awesome round, so is 45, and 9mm. The only thing I can say is try to keep your collection to a theme, be it historical, a certian maker, a certian country, or a certian type of weapon. Enjoy all the calibers from .50 S&W to 22 short. |

I'm trying to collect a wide variety of calibers so I can get an idea of what they are like and how they differ from each other.
For handguns I currently have: .22LR .380ACP .357mag/.38spcl 9x19mm .357sig .40SW .45ACP Two calibers that I don't have yet that I really want are 10mm and 44mag.  A few that are low on the priority list but I find to have a coolness factor are 7.62x25, 5.7x28, .25, .32, .38super, .41mag and .500. A .410 revolver would be cool too.  I don't understand the need to be "standardized". Like was mentioned above, variety is the spice of life.

I'm to the point where I wish I had a fewer choices. I have 8 different rifle calibers and 3 pistol calibers giving a grand total of 10. 22lr is in the rifle and pistol side. Some of you thought I couldn't add.
Stick with half a dozen or less different calibers and loaded up on ammo |

.22lr 9mm .45acp 5.56 7.62x39 .308 12 gauge 5.7 Will add: .50 BMG .38 Special I'm limiting myself to 10 different calibers, would actually like it to be less but there are some guns I just must have. I think that however many calibers you have its best to pick one pistol and one rifle caliber that you shoot everytime and train with to become very proficient. |

I like to keep it simple
Pistols: (2) 9mm (4) 45ACP Shotgun: (3) 12 gauge (1) 16 gauge... it was a gift Rifle: (4) .223/5.56 (1) 30-30 Win. (4) .22 LR (1) 7mm Mauser... also a gift I try to stick with the same calibers if I can. All my guns are different for the most part, so Im still flexible as to what my needs/ requirements might be. Might add later: .38 Special (Snub nose) .308 Win (Rem 700) 7.62x39 (AK) |

I'm not averse to adding a new caliber to the collection, but I have my core calibers- .308, 8mm Mauser, .22LR, 7.5 Swiss, 12 gauge, and 9x19- and try to stick to those. Since i reload everything except .22 and 12 gauge, it's helpful to stick to a few basic calibers.
I'll be adding only a few more calibers: .338 Lapua, .45 Colt, .357/.38, and 7.5 MAS. |

.45acp is pretty much my only caliber. I have 10 different .45s but I do have a Walther
P22 (that I plan to sell) & 1 .357 revolver. I've tried 9mm & .40S&W & didn't care for either one. |

I actually do what SD307 said, I have a "theme" to my collecting.
I have a 12ga, 9mm, .22lr, .45ACP, and .223/5.556. Everything, with the exception of my training pistol/rifle in .22lr, is a military/tactical gun -- and even then I have those lovely Tech Sights on the Ruger 10/22. As far as pistols go, I'll likely be adding .357 and 5.7x28. |

I would rather have 3 handguns in the same caliber and purchase cases of that caliber than 3 handguns in different calibers and a few boxes of that... a case of this... etc.

I have two pistol calibers and only one model for each caliber.
Thus I have a couple of G19's for 9mm and a couple of USP's for 45. I'm not buying anything else except more of the same (well maybe a G26, but that is essentially the same gun). |

As of right now I am trying to keep to accessible calibers for my rifles and pistols. They include: 9mm, .357mag, 45 acp, .22, .308win, and .223. I really want to add a 6.5 Grendel or a big bore AR to the collection but ammo prices are to high.

Sidearms in 10mm, 9mm, .40S&W, .45ACP, .380, .22lr, .410ga & 5.7x28mm ARs in .223/5.56 & ARs & FALs in .308 (standard and plentiful ammo) ARs in 6.5 Grendel & 6.5 Creedmoor (long range) AR & PS90 in 5.7x28mm (purely for the charm of it) ARs in .458 SOCOM & .50 Beowulf (fun and pounding targets to splinters) Shotguns in 12ga, 20ga Rifles in .50 BMG, .243, 7mm WbyMag, .300 WbyMag & .338 Lapua (pending) I like various calibers to learn/understand first hand the differences in exterior and terminal ballistics, design, etc. .50 BMGs were acquired simply as investments. Some are still uppers awaiting completed lowers to be attached. ETA: Doh!! Forgot 7.62x39mm and 5.45mm chuck |

I buy different calibers.
Its fun taking out different calibers everynow and then. I dont keep 1000 rds of each though. I only stock pile rounds for the ones I shoot most and use as home defense weapons (9mm, 45acp and 5.56). All the other calibers I just keep a hundred rds or so of each for hunting and shooting every now and then. |

Long guns
.22LR .223 .308 .30-06 12 ga Handguns .22LR 9mm .40 S&W .44 Magnum If I buy any new rifle calibres it will be somthing like .243 or 30-30 for the kids to hunt with. In handguns I may one day get another .357 Mag. To me, the glaring thing missing is a .45 ACP...but I'm mostly shooting .223, 9mm and rimfire to save money. |
