When I load them myself, 240 gr. JHP or JSP with 24 gr. of WW296 or H110.....I bought some of Garrett's heavy cast lead ammo with a 310 gr. bullet at 1325 fps.....this is some wicked stuff.......expensive, but, worth it if you are going after something big and mean.....deer, the 240 gr. are good enough............

My favorite 44 mag load is the 300Gn Hornady XTP.

My favorite 44 mag deer hunting load isnt a 44mag at all. The 210Gn .41 mag offers a better balance of flat trajectory and deep penetration than any avialbe 44 mag load.  the deep penetrating 44 mag loads have rainbow trajectories. The flat shooting 44 mag loads have poor sectional density which really limits their penetration.

Which 44 Magnum are you going to put this in?

6.5" S&W 629 Classic.

I worked up a load of a 240JHP over 24.5 grains of Win 296 and a magnum primer. They chrono My gun at about 1400fps. Flash, Noise and recoil are pretty stout.

We run up to central Illinois every year to My friends farm. We always get deer. Illinois passed a new law that allows handguns during shotgun season, so I need a load for midwestern deer.

Good Evening Derek,
If the load you mention works well for you I see no reason the 240 Gr. JHP wouldn't work for Whitetail Deer, I would slow it down a bit as your load is running about 40,000 cup. I prefer lead cast bullets as velocities run higher with much lower pressures. I had a 629 Classic years ago, it was one of the nicest revolvers I ever owned. I used a cast 300 Gr. with g/c with 20 Gr of W296, velocity runs about 1300 fps with pressures running under 35,000 cup.
Good Luck with your Handgun Hunting.

Hi
I have used a 240 cast SWC with a warmish load
of 2400 (work up to 19 or 19.5GR).Use a heavy crimp.
Have not used it on deer but killed a couple of Hogs AOK . This was a 6.5" S&W 629. This same load
hauls out of my marlin cowboy although I have only
"killed" steel plates.I have  used winchester
large rifle primers, seems to work just fine for this load, consistent and accurate.   NHSPORT
