couldn't think of the right subject line but my question is:

i'd like to have a mag of hollow points in my XD9 at home for defense. how many rounds should i run through it to know it'll work reliably with hp's? they're expensive to shoot but i don't feel comfortable with only 10 having gone down the tube (no problems).

IMO, at least run 100rds of HPs thru it before you decide it's worthy. If it does all of them w/o a hiccup then you should have no problem.

100 - 200 is fine.

Don't just slow fire them either. Shoot them like how you might do it in a defensive situation. shoot it rapid fire, and strong hand weak hand only.

However many that you feel comfortable with. I personally am happy with a single 50 round box. If you feel the need for more than that then go for it. If you are going to have problems you will see it most likely within the first 50 rounds.

After several years with my HS2000 I've never had any problems with any of the better quality JHPs, so I doubt you'll experience any either. But before you weigh the cost of a couple boxes of Gold Dots or SXTs, remember, your balancing the cost against saving your butt. What value do you place on that.

Gold Dots = X$
My Butt = Priceless.

And no comment on $/lb needed.

thanks for the replies! does walmart have cheap HP's for range use? i can get the good ones at the shooting shop for the real deal.

You can get cheaper whitebox hollowpoints, but I think they are trying to encourage you to shoot the same round that you intend to use as a carry round, not just any hollowpoint.

I like to put 100 rounds of what Im going to carry plus another 200 rounds of ball before I trust a handgun to carry.

i turned into THAT GUY...the one who tries to find a cheaper way of doing things. sad..just sad. heheh. when i get some spart $ i'll buy a few boxes of the good stuff then. i've only had the xd9 for a little over a month and have 560rds though it so far with no problems.

I running 500 rounds of ball thru my CZ-75 BD compact thru it (250 so far w/o a burp). then 100 of the carry ammo.

My life is worth it.

Run as many rounds as you can afford and feel comfortable with. you decide your own level of peace of mind.
