much to ask for? Springfield quoted me 1900 bucks to make one, which would basically amount to replacing a steel frame with an alloy one and sending it to me, thereby (somehow) transforming an $800 pistol in to an $1800 pistol.

Anyone help? This is what I really want, and I'm not convinced I have to pay that much to get it. My 5" Lightweight .45 Loaded is a gorgeous fighting machine...how hard could it be to make me a 9?

For about $1000 you can get a STI 1911 in 9mm which is superior to a springfeild. STI's are very very popular with competive pistol shooters.

Hey fullclip,
I bought a Star Model B back in the early 90's.
The trouble with it was a very weak hammer spring which would cause a lot of miss fires. Not enough striking power to shoot some ammo. Maybe Star has fixed that problem by now. If they havn't; I wouldn't waste my money. Mine was NIB.

I traded it back to the same gun shop for a new Browning HP.
Best trade I ever made!!!!!

Hey back at ya thdr13, sorry you had that problem, I have 2 surplus Star B's and never had a miss fire with either. And yes I agree about the Brownng but that is a pistol of pistols.

The biggest challenge you'll face is that most alloy frames are built to Commander size.

Of course you could put a 5" slide on them but it won't look right, since there will be a gap between the front of the dust cover and the rear of the recoil spring housing on the slide.

You'll most likely have to buy one from Caspian or somebody.

STI makes one, its called the Tactical Light model and has the rail I believe. Check stiguns.com

Definitely give Gary a call at Caspian and talk with him...very nice guy...and he will fix you up...for a whole lot less than $1800.00!
