I've always wanted one and now its time. Does anybody have any recommendations as too witch one to buy?

that'll do the job just fine. don't be put off if it's marked FN instead of browning, all hipowers are made by FN. All or most of the recently imported hipowers are marked FN. I have one and it's a very nice pistol.

Unless you are buying *strictly* a target gun, what's the point? No field gun should have adjustable sights (which are much more fragile, and worthless if broken or if pieces get lost). And at pistol ranges, shooting an inch to one side isn't a big deal. I've done quite a bit of 100 yard pistol shooting (just because it's interesting, not because I necessarily think it would be useful), and I have yet to find a pistol that I couldn't hit a gallon jug at least 5 out of 10 times with at that distance. Heck, it can be done with a Makarov, with those little bitty sights.

Anyway, I'll shut up now.

I agree; start off with the basic MKIII and you'll be well served.

Damn you for posting that pic! It makes my FEG hi-power look weak, and makes me want to go out and buy an FN Mk. III.

I am sitting here fondling my new FM Detective with micarta grips, wide trigger and extended safety. This thing feels great in hand. My Commander is going to have to share some holster time with it. FAC had them for $249.

I agree with Troy. Go with the MKIII, put some of the flat Pachmar rubber checkered grips on it and buy some of the 17 round South African mags from CDNN Investments and you will be happy. (Just finished cleaning mine from a day at the range yesterday.)

9mm will give you more capacity, cheaper practice rounds, and a wide variety of effective defensive loads. The .40 won't be nearly as cheap to feed for practice.

Those 17 round South African mags that I mentioned were for the 9mm. I've not tried the 40

I have been shooting the BHP for almost 30 years and recently bought a MkIII in 9mm. Other than wood grips and a polish on the feed ramp I have kept it stock. It is even better than my 74 HiPower.

I declare the Browning the KING of 9mm's. All others pale in comparison.

Got my Sivler Chrome BHP a month or so ago. Like it alot. Then I got SA 17rd mags. I now love it alot! Get it in 9mm. Cheaper to shoot, more common parts and the way John Browning intended it to be.

9mm or 40 ---- 9 mm gives you more rounds 40 means if you can hit your target, you don't have to use as many. Ford or Chevy arguement.

I have 3 Hi Powers, 1 Tanget sighted T series, 1 standard T series and a MKIII early made in Belgium.

The MKIII gets the nod for accuracy and heavy use. Added Novak nite sites to the MKIII an left it stock except for a tiny bit of trigger clean up. Shoots about 1.75" dead to point of aim with Black Talons. 9MM will do the work if you do yours and I like the cheap practice ammo.

I think any gun in 9MM will outlast it's .40 caliber counterpart, if thats a concern to you.
When the .40 arrived everybody had to field one, ready or not. Some just "worked" better than others, depending on how much engineering went into the design to take more punishment.
My nod goes to the 9MM for long term hard use, let alone parts, ammo prices and recoil.

Here's a 1993 FEG PJK-9HP which is a dead clone for an old T-model Hi-Power. I just got this this year, brand new with the original 13-rd. mags, from a guy that squirreled a bunch of them away before '94, and you will see ones like it come up on the auctions every so often.

Intresting news for Highpower fans. Charles Daly is now selling a highpower 9mm with Uncle Mikes flat rubber grips extended safety and Ashley sights onboard at time of purchase.

I don't know who the original maker is, but they look nice.

Definitely a MkIII in whatever caliber you prefer..be it 9 or 40. Both are super sweet.

By the way...word on the Charles Daly is that the parts are FEG assemblined in the US....I have no confirmation on the truth of that statement. The do look pretty good...however the T series front end looks a little odd compared to the look of the rest of the gun. Still...might be an interesting piece...I love the look of the thumb safety.
