Seeing some of the pics here of various backup guns, I was wondering how many of you guys do this? I know alot of people carry Glocks in the same caliber, but what about the guys that carry a semi auto as the primary, and a snubbie as a backup? or semi autos of different calibers?

My BUG is never the same caliber as my primary since I want a more powerful caliber as primary.  My normal carry gun is either a 10mm Glock 29 or a 9mm Glock 26.  My BUG is a S&W Bodyguard in 38 Special.  I've also been known to carry the G26 as a BUG when I'm carrying a full size 10mm G20 OWB.

To me a BUG is a last ditch, all or nothing, save my ass, gun when all else has failed.  Matching calibers with the primary doesn't seem to me to be a major issue.

Am I wrong?  My mind is always open to new ideas, so post em if you've got em.

Primary is 357 sig or 45acp and B.U.G is 9x19. I am not L.E. and do not carry 2 weapons very often. I believe you should carry a high quality weapon that helps mitigate problems.

No, I dont think you are wrong..........I know that some carry S&W snubbies as backup to 1911's, or even .357 revolvers, and I was also considering carrying a snubbie or compact 9mm as a backup to a 1911. I wanted to get an idea from the members of what they carry and what they thought about the idea.........

Also, I am still fishing for ideas for a BUG.........I was thinking of scrapping that idea and just getting a SIG 225 and calling that the backup or CCW, but the idea of a Glock 26, 19 or 36 is appealing, and they hold more ammo..........even the 642 would be a good idea to go with my GP-100..........or maybe even a compact XD

No BUG here, considering it though.

Not sure what I'd use, maybe a .32 or even a .38 snubby. Not sure how lugging a steel 1911 and a steel .38 snubby all day would be though. Good reason to go buy an Airweight I guess.

Primary: Springfield XD-45
Back-up: Glock 27

"ammo interchangability" is a pipe dream...if the shit's so deep you're using your backup gun, your primary is likely dry or there's no time for unloading/reloading ammo from primary to backup mags. Even if you can use the same ones (like Glock) odds are it won't likely be an issue.

Find a backup that's reliable and works in the role you put it in. Don't narrow your choices simply to keep calibers the same.

1911 Commander primary and SA Micro Compact BUG. I've only carried two pistols a few times. Both were a bad/strange situation by myself that I couldn't avoid and couldn't have a long gun in the truck.

Primary is .45acp with at least 2 spare mags. Backup is generally either 9mm (G26) or .38spl (J frame S&W).  Generally don't carry reloads for the backup on my person.  There is spare ammo for reloads in the vehicle though.  I carry the backup in case primary weapon goes tits up and cannot be cleared in a reasonable time frame or if I am accompanied by my wife when the SHTF.  In the latter case she would be given the backup for her use while I employ my primary.

glock 19 and a colt agent 38 wheel gun conceals better than a glock 26 in my left front pants pocket and the boss won't let me carry kel tec or kahr so I stick w/the colt(course it helps that I have carried said colt in the same place for 10 years now)
