Since I only have 1 handgun, it's an EAA steel-framed Witness compact, in 9mm parabellum, with an LPA adjustable rear sight.

My Desert Eagle, MK XIX.

Yeah yeah, I know it's a bit complicated, and not the most reliable gun you can have...
But I can have potentially 4 different calibers:
.357 mag,.44 mag,.50 Action Express and .440 Cor Bon (if I can find the barrel...)
I can handle damn near anything that walks the Earth with that.
And with proper maintenance and technique, works just fine. And the accuracy is just amazing.

Plus I just like it.

My Glock 23-
Large capacity, will work no matter what the condition, very good stopping power.

Now, if it were "What SHTF Pistol"
I would say my Beretta 9mm-
Large capacity, ammo is plentiful, mags are easy to find and is still very reliable.

Like Zardoz, I only have one. A G30. Accurate gun, with 10+1 rounds of .45. I'd like to get a Sig 226 in 9mm for some cheaper shooting though.

My 3 year old Wilson Service Grade Protector.

Its been TOTALLY reliable, controlable, its thin and conceals well, and fits my hand like a glove. Ammo is available anywhere. And no one ever had to argue that .45ACP was as good as 9mm/.40 et al

My customized "combat" 1911A1 in .400 corbon, and if I had to switch it'd only take me 30 seconds to put the .45 a.c.p. barrel back in.

Man, this crew is packing some nice stuff.

45 ACP H&K in the SOCOM is proven to 30,000+P rds. Civilian versions of SOCOM are two. H&K USP Expert and the more affordable USP Tactical model.

Try one you will like it.

1911's...damn right but the goods start around a $1000, Wilson, Les Baer, and such are x 2 in $. They are high performance weapons and worth the cost.

Also runs are Sig and Glock chambered in 45 ACP...equal to off the shelf H&K USP and others.

I have a copy of all the above listed handguns in my gun room today, between my brother and myself, I will list the number one weapon as the Wilson. Les Bear offers a handgun that is a close to perfect as humanly possible. Kimber is so close to Wilson and Les Baer that I conclude the difference is too small to measure.

If I could have only one...only one...only one... it is the H&K Expert. The reasons are ease of cleaning and the proven robust design of the H&K USP weapons system...bad to the bone.

damn all these guys and there .45s. Don't get me wrong, I trust my life with my .45 everyday...but if I could own only one handgun...and I didn't need one for work. Hands down....s&w k-22. Yeah I know it's a .22....but think of it....you wan't to be shot by it? I've been shot with a .22 got 40grns of lead in my knee to prove it.....not fun at all. and if TSHTF guess what, you can find ammo for it EVERYWHERE. Just my opinion though.

Cheap, plentiful mags, and I'm set up to reload .45 out the wazoo.

Something in a medium-compact, hi-cap 9mm. GLOCK 19, Sig 229, or chopped down HiPower. Small enough to conceal, big enough to shoot well, good ammo availability.

You all saying you really only want 8 damn shots with your 1911's in a SHTF action!?

Come on. At least get something with 10+ rounds to bang out. In a tactical environment is not like shooting some damn paper targets. You will not get off clean head shots when your heart is beating out of your chest and adrenaline is taking over your fine motor skills.

I love 1911;s too but I think there is a better .45cal tool for the job.

Just my opinion is all.

I got 10 round mags for my 1911-A1's and keep one in the chamber 10+1=11. I always carry two extra mags.

I have been in SHTF situations. I don't try head shots.

I had a department issue SW Model 10, six shot .38 special that I had to use a few times. I think if I used it as a club it would of had more knockdown power than the .38 fmj rounds we had to use. But it saved my ass.

I'm hoping with a 230gr. JHP .45 ACP, I wouldn't need 10+ rounds to take someone out, or at least help me fight my way to my AR15.

if "all around purpose" means what i think it does, i'll have to go with my SnW 657.
a stainless .41 mag with 6" bbl. this is pretty much all purpose in my mind.

having passed down a few 19ll's to close family members, i have only 5 remaining. you can see that i have a close afinity to ole slabsides and would bawl and squall at having to give them up for a wheelgun. my oldest purchase dates from the late 50's.

but, facts is facts, and the .45acp won't stand up to the range and power of my .357/41/44 mags.

Lord, please don't make me give up my 1911's tho.
