this is for personal defense and general plinking.  9mm or .40s&w?  Ive shot a XD-40 before. Anybody have personal experience with the 9mm?  Also which do you prefer 9 or 40?

My opinion on personal defense is that if you buy the right ammo it shouldn't matter(as much) which cal. you use.  I use 9mm because that is what I have always shot and feel comfortable with... The word plinking should answer the later part of the question for you.  If you are doing a lot of "for fun" plinking and target shooting, why not use the cheaper of the two...9mm.  Get the XD9 bi-tone, it's a hot looking gun

i went with the .40 since it is also my duty ammo, I get 300 rounds a quarter for practice.

9mm.
1. you can use 40 cal XD mags and stuff them with 15 rounds of 9mm!

2. 9mm is way cheaper than 40

3. 9mm is more comfortable to shoot

4. you can find 9mm ammo everywhere

5.  I love MY 9mm XD.  take MRW's word for it!

9MM IS ALOT EASIER TO BE ACURATE WITH THAN .40 CAL.dont listen to all the armchair balistics experts,9mm is leathal.

FWIW, anyone notice in the latest American Rifleman that the XD was named pistol of the year....... not bad too for a Glock copy.

I loved my XD so much i bought the company!

not really, but my XD-9 is my favorite pistol.  of course i only own two and the other is a wheel gun so maybe i am biased but it is a great gun.  i got mine in nine cuz the ammo is cheap, available anywhere, and the recoil is almost nonexistant.  and yes, 9mm can be quite deadly, can you say Gold Dot +P?

I haven't seen it done but I have heard plenty that yes it is possible to stuff 15 rounds of 9mm into the .40 mags and from what I understand it is perfectly legal to do so.

Absolutely and they still will work in the XD40 also which makes them perfectly legal.  Get some!  I love my XD's!

I bought mine in .40 caliber because I wanted a .40 caliber pistol. I'll probably end up trading it in towards an XD-45 if/when they become a reality.

I went to the range today with my newly aquired XD9 and had a blast.  I have not done a lot of hand gun shooting before and was amazed at the groupings I was getting at 10,15, and 20 yards.  For a defensive weapon you sure can't complain!  Now i just need to get some of those .40 cal mags.

For the range, you can't beat the XD-9.  You can buy legal hi-caps and 9mm is pretty cheap.

Both the XD.40 and the 9mm are great pistols...I prefer the 9mm, for all the reasons mentioned before...plus I got mine when it was an HS2000 for $269 NIB...the handgun buy of the century.   3000k rounds later, it's still going strong, and I've never had a lick of trouble of any kind.  At this point if you GAVE me a Glock I'd still shoot the HS.

I shot my friend's brand new Sig, and still prefer the HS2000...but I didn't have the heart to tell him.  (He sold his XD 40 'cos he's left handed, and was having a bitch of a time getting leather for it).

Even at around $400, the XD is still a great buy.

Yes, you can indeed use the .40 mags and stick 15 rounds of 9mm...it functions perfectly.  I managed to snag one of my buddy's mags when he sold the gun hehehe.  I also have a S&W 5906 mag that I drilled a little hole in, and it works too...just not as comsmetic.  I've heard that the Baretta 92F mags will works, but stick out a little on the bottom.
