I'm finally down to two handgun calibers; 9mm and 45acp. Still, a part of me thinks I should just stick with the 9mm. Pure economics is the main motivator for this thought. I love both calibers (I tend to shoot the 45acp a tad better), and would not feel "undergunned" with a 9mm though.
Anyone just has a 9mm for their handguns? If so, do you have any regrets getting rid of other calibers? Especially the 45acp, if you had that caliber? If I did just stick with 9mms, I would have to replace my Glock 30 and Sig 220. I was thinking about getting a Glock 26 or 19 and a Sig 228 or 239 (leaning more toward a 228, since I already have a Sig 226). Like I said, all this is just a thought. Flame suit on. Goe easy with the "9mm is a woman's round" flames.

I shoot a variety of handgun cartridges but if I were thinking just in terms of a defensive autoloader, I doubt I'd look any further than the 9x19. IMO it's numerous plusses outweigh any perceived minus in "stopping power."

45acp is all i have left, still have several 1000 rounds of 9mm. thinking of finding a cz po1, maybe.

I own a variey of calibers but the main caliber of choice is 9mm.
I am a believer of shot placement vs bigger is better. |

You shouldn't feel undergunned with a 9. There's a reason it is the most widely used pistol round in the world.

Due mainly to budget issues I shoot 9mm and .22LR. Those are the only two calibers I own right now. And I never feel undergunned with 9mm. It is a completely capable round given a good load and proper bullet design.

I own two .40s and a .45 and plan on adding another .45 before the year ends.
While I like the thought of having other calibers, theres just no need for them IMO. 357 Sig is a little pricier and harder to find where I live. While 9mm is cheap to shoot, I think its too small (make the first shot count and you dont need the other 16 rounds). 10mm is fantastic, but doesnt get enough love. Another reason Im not planning on varying too much is because its fewer dies I have to buy for the realoader. I will be adding a SW model 57 as a handmedown from my grandfather which I probably wont shoot often, as well as a model 19 from my father and I thought about getting a .38 super and building an open class race gun, but thats going to be awhile. I dont think theres anything wrong with just 1 caliber, but for me, there are only 2 that I "currently" trust my safety too. My .02. |

I have 1 .45 auto and 2 9mms.
I shop for ammo for the 9mms and shoot them more. I will never let my Colt Commander go though! |

I have gone through several pistol platforms. I really wanted to like the Sig in 9mm, but the DA to SA transition always left me with one flyer. I have standardized to a(several) 1911's in .45. After all, everyone knows that a 1911in 9mm is blasphemy
 . I now buy .45 buy the thousands, much easier

I like both the 9mm and the .45, but if I had to choose only one caliber, I'd probably split the difference and go for a caliber I don't otherwise care for. .40 S&W.
But as others have said, variety is the spice of life. I have .22LR 7.62x25mm 9x18mm 9x19mm .45 ACP I would like to add 10mm to the mix. And maybe, just maybe, .50 AE just for the hell of it. |

Yes, .45.
I bought a pair of wheel guns recently, but I train with .45, carry .45 and the next wheelgun will be a 625. If you only train with one, then by all means, feel free to consolidate. |

I switched from a 1911A1 .45 and a Beretta 92FS 9mm about 5 years ago. I now shoot a full size Glock in 40S&W and could not be happier. IMO the 40 offers the most bang for the buck for what I need.

.38 spl .357 mag .41 spl .44 spl .44 mag .45 acp .45 lc .410 ga .50 AE If I could add a calibre it would be either 9x18 or 5.7 Not all are mine but I have access to all and have at one time carried all of them, some for SD, and some for hunting. (the .410 and .45 lc is a snake gun though so ONLY on the property) If I had to pick one, I just couldnt I would have to go with both the .22lr and .357 mag (Although most of the time its loaded with .38) M PS whoever wanted to add the .50AE, It is VERY FUN! We brought it on a trip down to the bayou... We didnt have no beamz tho  |

Thats all I have now, and probably will continue to have while Im still in college. 9mm is just so damn cheap I can practice a lot which is important to me; and looking down the mag at 15 federal147g JHP's, I dont feel undergunned.
People fight about 9vs45vs40 all the time, but Im usually thinking I must have some pretty big problems considering if Im using my Glock, Ive already run through at least a dozen mags of M855.

I've consolidated my handguns as much as possible to 9mm and .32ACP. I have a GLOCK 34, 2-GLOCK 19s, a Kahr PM9, and a Kel-Tec P-32. About a year ago, I decided it didn't make mcuh sense to have a bunch of handguns I never shot. Different action types, different holsters, and different magazines were just a waste, IMO. Over the last year I've sold a Sig P226, a Beretta 92F, an FN Hipower, a Taurus PT-92, a Heritage Stealth, a S&W 642, and a S&W 66. I don't miss any of them at all. The GLOCKs take care of 99% of my handgun needs, the Kahr replaced the 642 as my full time BUG, and the Kel-Tec is so tiny it can be carried anywhere.
I also have a couple of Ruger MkIIs if we're counting rimfires. |

All my handguns are in 9mm and I in no way see it uncapable for the job. It's nice that it's more affordable than other rounds, but that doesn't keep me from expanding to other pistol rounds if I wanted to. I just find modern 9mm in hollowpoint and EFMJ the best all around pistol caliber for power and capacity.
It does everything I want so there is no reason to waste time, training and money with .40S&W or .45acp where I could be practicing with the round I carry and would carry regardless. Higher caliber pistol rounds for hunting would be more interesting, but I'd still always prefer a rifle in .308/7.62x51 and for anything smaller the M1 carbine is near perfect with it's hollowpoint choices. Even though I enjoy fun guns I don't have a concern for them now over practical guns and have been moving towards a condensed caliber choice instead of the wide spread caliber makeup most people seem to have and build more of. It's just too unorganized to me and would confuse another family member more if they went to grab one of my guns in a time of emergency. That means more of the same guns in the same caliber to keep it well organized and me and my family well armed. All the calibers I want to have right now are 9mm, .308 and .30carbine. I'm considering adding on a new .223, but the carbine is my house rifle choice as of now and anywhere else I'd never choose the .223 over an M14. |

I own a mix of calibers and platforms so I horrible amount of different magazines and ammo. Unfortunately picking one would be difficult. |

I have 4 9mms and 4 .45s. I don't feel the need for any more handgun calibers, except maybe a .44 magnum.

I only carry 45ACP. I carry a Glock 21 on duty and a Glock 36 off duty. I believe 9mm is not a bad round for duty carry when using the "+p". It's cheaper to shoot. I also believe bigger rounds = bigger holes. I have never been in a gun fight, but I have had to pull my pistol a few times. Im not speaking from experience.
I have read a lot about being mentally prepared for such an event. Chances are you will only get off a few rounds and you will not have time to aim. Basically point and shoot. I would rather do as much damage as I can. |

I doubt I ever will, though. I am way too attached to my Sig P220 & 225....

I am only have a 9mm. I am thinking about getting a .22 to save on ammo costs/shoot more, but right now, the only caliber I have is 9mm. I only have one rifle caliber as well, .223. I guess I am just strange though.

Absolutely! Any of you guys hunt? Got to have a good .22 lr or two. Thinking about a .17 HMR too. Got a Ruger Bisley Blackhawk in .45 Colt for bigger stuff. Eyeing up a .480 Ruger as well. I had 9mm and .45, traded my G17 for a G21 so now I have all .45 pistols. 1911 and G21.
My next pistol will be a 9mm though. I got .45 because I didnt have one, now that I have 2 I realize that ther is a big difference in 9mm and .45...... .45 is more expensive! I believe that if you shoot somebody with 9mm, with good shot placement, they WILL die! With that said, I still prefer .45, thats just personal prefrence, I would feel 100% safe if all I had was a 9mm. |

For me personally, no. I prefer 45's but have several 38's/357's, a couple 9's and a couple other "mouse guns" for my everyday personal protection arms (not including the other "fun" guns). Limiting yourself to only one caliber is almost like limiting yourself to only having tennis shoes.
I'm not trying to be a troll, but someone mentioned shot placement as being more important than caliber size. While this is true, if your shot placement is the same regardless of caliber, I still think a bigger bullet is better. I would agree that the 9mm is a capable self-defense round. In the end, I can see your point about only having to worry about one caliber. This is one reason why many LE agencies try to "standard issue" their guns. The benefit would be only having to "stock pile" one caliber of ammunition for handguns. This can be taken even further though, in that maybe you should only limit yourself to one brand of gun then. That way you only have to have one type of holster, magazines, extra parts, etc. Wouldn't two guns (a Glock 19 and 26, for instance) then do EVERYTHING you needed them to? Maybe...but as someone else put it earlier, variety is the spice of life. As for me, I'll keep all of mine. |

I have probably owned just about everything at one time or another but now have
.22 LR, .32 ACP, .357 Mag, .357/44 Bain & Davis, 9mm, .40, and .44 Mag. If you want to count the AR pistol .223 but I consider it a handgun in paperwork only. The handguns that get used are Browning Buckmark .22 LR, Kel-Tec P32 .32 ACP, S&W 649 .357 Mag, HK P2000SK .40, and for hunting S&W 29 .44 Mag. I could probably weed out the J frame but it carries much better in a pocket then the autos do. If I had to go to one caliber it would be .40 but I could live with 9mm or .357 Mag. (probably a older Smith 66 or Ruger Speed Six with a 2 1/2" or 3" bbl) as well. |

First of all, I assume you have no revolvers (or, at most, a 9mm revolver). But, even at that, NO .22 HANDGUNS?!?! Not that they are necessary, but they are just so much GOOD, CHEAP FUN!  Seriously though, I have been trying to do the same thing over the past year or two and have eliminated many calibers I just didn't need. Even so, I don't think I will ever get down to just one.  I don't think I could ever give up my .22s, my revolver loads, or the .45ACPs (even though I primarily carry and shoot 9mms [you'll get no flame from me  ]). And, until someone makes a 9mm that I can carry in a pocket in dress attire all-day/every-day comfortably and invisibly, I'll have to keep .380ACP in the stable as well...

No 22 handguns, but I do have a 22lr rifle. Down the road, I'll probably get a semi-auto 22, probably a Ruger. And correct on the no revolvers. Wheelguns just dont do it for me anymore. Have you checked out the Kahr PM9? |

I am trying too stick with just a few calibers. If I can find pistols/rifles in the same caliber I'll lean towards those.
Ex. I just bought a Vaquero in .45c. My next rifle will likely be a Marlin lever action in .45c. Aside from the "cowboy" guns I plan to stick to .45acp as much as possible in handguns. Seems like a good idea to me. If I take up reloading it would definatly be easier to keep up with just a couple cals. I'd rather have 7-8 guns in 1-2 calibers than have to stock pile 43 different kinds of ammo(of course .22's and shotguns are exempt from this...the ammo is pretty cheap for them anyway). Also if you have a lot of different calibers you are likely to have favorites and leave some un-fired for long periods of time. I have a 410 and 16g shotgun that I haven't shot in years. The 12g will do all I need to do. I just keep the others for sentimental value. |

Yep, great pistol IMO but it just doesn't disappear in dress slacks on me enough for full-time pocket-pistol duty (i.e., at work, where I can't have one on my hip and absolutely cannot afford to "print" at all).  BTW, you REALLY need at least one .22 pistol. If you already have .22 rifles, then it isn't really an "extra caliber" to stock, right?

I use a Sig 228 and a Glock 26. Both 9mm. Cheap ammo means I can shoot more. Also the 228 is a good gun to teach people with.

I find myself in the same situation as you. I currently have handguns in - .22 .32 .38 .380 7.62 Tokarev 9mm .357 .44Sp 45ACP While it is nice to own a bunch of handguns, keeping up with mags, ammo, holsters etc. has become an expensive pain (I like Kramer holsters, and probably have half a dozen or so that I don't need anymore, and are like new.) Anyway, I'm thinking of narrowing things down to .22, 9mm and .45ACP...that's it. An example - since I got my CCW a few years ago I've purchased, and still have a S&W642, Beretta85, KelTec3AT, Glock30, Glock27. And today, I just bought a Kahr P9. Other handguns include a XD45, SIG Trailside .22, a used Charter Arms Bulldog, Buckmark and various C&Rs. In the next year I plan on slimming down some. In the end I will probably only keep my XD45(nightstand), Trailside(plinking and plain old fun), Kahr P9(CCW) and G30(vehicle). That will get me down to 3 good calibers that should cover all the bases. Have a good one! |

I have cut back to only 6 calibers.
12g .223/5.56 7.62X39 .45 ACP 9mm .22lr I had to sell some guns that I liked alot, but have not missed them because I never shot them. It was a waste and with the extra money from the guns/ammo/holsters that sat in the safe I have been able to shoot more. Also I have noticed that I'm buying less guns and shooting more. IMO this is a cycle that alot of shooters go through. Maybe the early stage of buying lots of guns/calibers is our way of finding what works for us. If I had to pick one or two it would be a .45 (1911) and .223/5.56 (AR15). Although, I would be lost with out my CCW, a glock in 9mm. |

while I have guns in most of the common calibers, I have 4 go to defensive pistols. 3 are 9mm and if I were buying the 4th over again, I'd probably get it in 9mm as well.
