I recently purchased a Kimber Custom II .45, it came with an 8 round mag.

What are the holes on the bottom (on the base plate) of the magazine for?  

I've heard that 8 round mags are not as reliable as 7 round.  I haven't had any problems with the 8 round mag yet and I have bought a couple of spares from Kimber. I'd like to purchase additional mags and would like to know what brands are known to be reliable?

the holes are there for the installation of aftermarket bumper pads.

IMO the most reliable mags are the Wilson Combat mags. YMMV

Chip McCormick has a high end mag.8 and 10 rounders in ss is what I picked up.Never had any problems.I'm all for the 8's

Use two sheet metal screws to secure a bumper pad. When hot reloading, let the mag drop of its own, and insert a fresh one. The bumper pad prevents a lot of damage to the mag.
