I bought a practically NIB Ruger GP100 off of an individual for $300; the gun has the box and all the papers.
I've had S&W revolvers for 27 years, this is the first Ruger I've ever owned.

Was $300 a good price, and will this gun hold up like a 686?
I shot a few rounds through it, I was suprised at how smooth and accurate it is.

I owned one about 12 years ago. If yours has decent trigger, I say keep it. Mine was pretty bad and I ended up selling it. The Ruger GP 100 is one of the most durable .357's available. I would much rather have your $300 used Ruger than one of the New $600 + Smith and Wesson revolvers.

That is the same price I paid for mine, but I got a discount

From what I have been told, it is a very good price, and you couldn't ask for a better revolver.
I love mine, and plan to keep it forever.

The GP100 is one of the most underated revolvers IMHO. For the price for the gun and a good trigger job, you would still be below the price of a S&W 686.

GP100 is a great gun. I owned a 4" for a while and have shot a 6" a bunch of times as well.
Very well made revolvers. If you are a target shooter you will want to smooth out the trigger disconnector a bit, but as a trail gun or all around shooter, you arent going to find another handgun for that price that will serve you as well.

Solid gun all around.
You wont regret the purchase.

If there is a gun you can throw off a cliff, fail to clean, stick in a closet and forget about for 10 yearsn and feed crappy ammo and still expect it to work, it's the GP-100. It's the toughest wheelgun made, IMHO.

It's why there's one beside my bed whilst I sleep. I don't trust any gun more.

I recently bought a used/like new GP100 for $250.00 that included a big bag of .38 spl ammo and some speed loaders. Makes me feel somewhat better about selling a SW 686 that I held as collateral for a loan of $175.00 that was never repaid and I sold that gun 10 years ago for the $175.00.

Yes, it is a good price. I bought one in S/S 4in. from a friend for $350.
I highly recommend you go to Wolff Springs and buy a reduced hammer spring. It is very easy to replace. Buy the pack that has different lbs. springs and you can try different ones until you get the one that you like. I did this with mine and my trigger pull is as sweet as my S&W M19.
If you take off your grips , you will see a small steel pin which is used to remove and install the hammer spring. GP100's are one of the easist revolvers to dis-assembe and re-assemble I have ever seen. They are built like a tank and will give you a lifetime of shooting.

New they go for closer to $400. And the things are like tanks. Will it last as long as the 686? It will bury the 686.

It appears that some old 686 speed loaders seem to work-is there a separate SL size for the GP100?

I had a 4" GP100, and I could not get decent groups with it to save my life. I bought it to hunt in Texas, I ended up trading it for a 4" Colt King Cobra. I used it to hunt two years ago, and have since bought a S&W M19 for hunting duty. What a sweet trigger, puts the Colt to shame and the Ruger does not even rate. I must have got one of the bad GP100s. We tried different ammo but it still did not group, they where like 9" groups all over the paper at 30 yards.
