+1 pick the one that fits your budget, that feels good to shoot for YOU, in a platform that feels good to YOU in general, would you prefer a single stack .45acp or a double stack .40sw? do you hate the recoil of either? personally, i went w/ the .45acp--less snappy recoil, bigger holes to begin with, less pressure, and just plain fun to shoot |

Use the same round as you do for your duty weapon. Why complicate things? |

What do you carry on duty? I carry a Glock 22 .40 on duty. But I carry a 1911 .45 off duty. I am very confident in both, but I go give a slight advantage to the .45 caliber. I prefer the slimness and fit of the 1911. Decide what you shoot the best and what fits you and your ability to conceal it.

The only choice is .45 auto. Just consider all other calibers to be non-existant.

I have always preferred faster cartridges out of barrels 4" and smaller (3.9 is pushing my theory). The .40 gets my vote.

The lessor recoil of a .45 over the .40 in a small gun will allow faster recovery time for quicker follow-up shots. The slower speed of the .45 will also allow one to practice more w/o their hand bothering them in a small gun, as well.

Either caliber is good. I would go with the gun that feel more comfortable. My favorite defense gun is the 229 in 40.
