Is it possible for a handgun to go off while riding on a roller coaster? I'm not talking about trigger wise. Is it also true fighter pilots are told to carry their sidearm w/out the magazine in the weapon while flying?

Call the Brady Bunch, they'll tell you a gun can "go off" just lieing around by itself.

As for pilots & roller coasters, that's bullshit.

Hell, I'd never leave a loaded gun in the SRT4. Too much power. I'd launch that FWD demon and the inertia would cause it to fire.

Happened once. Blew out my dash board.

No, pilots fly with their sidearm loaded and ready to go. It's the M9, so it's about as safe as you could ask for. If you yank and bank a jet enough to cause a UD, you're got more to worry about than a gun going off.

Actualy they are told to Holster the sidearms as carrying them will flying can cause mid air collisons.

the fighter pilot one is a fable, the TSA does not allow them to carry their sidearm onto the plane. Needs to be in the checked luggage.

I guess I can see them being told to carry with the chamber empty (doubtful), but with no mag at all?

My grandpa carried c&l in a bomber, but that was a while ago.

I do not see it happening on a Roller coaster or a Fighter Jet. I would be more concerned about losing my pistol on a roller coaster than having it fire while I am riding but it still should not happen if it was worn properly but I would not want to go on a 60mph udsidedown roller coaster with a topless holster on. Although I was never a pilot when I was in the Air Force I never heard of that rule but that does not mean it is not a Reg..

It's possible. AF cops carry with a round in the chamber, but maybe the AF just doesn't trust it's pilots. The Army doesn't trust soldiers to carry a mag in most of the time, and chambering a round is to be done only when outside the perimeter if at all.

I think it was a semi-serious question, so I'll give a semi-serious answer....If the pistol is striker-fired, and has a weak firing pin spring, I suppose it COULD go off if you pulled about 6 G's....or if the stress was enough to break something that holds the striker away from the breechface. Which is why they only let AF pilots and Chuck Norris types on those roller-coasters. Pretty simple, when you think about it!

Nope, as the entire gun will be travelling at the same speed. It would take a suddent stop to the gun & allowing the internals to continue to travel forward in order to have a ND, i.e. drop a gun on its muzzle on hard pavement.
