I really had my hopes on getting a Sig 228 but it's just out of my price range. My criteria is that small frame (for carry), 9mm or .45, below $400 (new or used). Also I'm not a huge fan of glocks. Tried the 19 and didnt really like it. I had never thought about one, but I saw the cz-75 compact in CDNN and wanted an opinion on that. Thanks for any help.

You should be able to find a used Sig P228 if you look hard enough for a decent price. But lets face it guns are expensive. The CZ-75 weapons are cheaper and work well and might be more in your price range. I do find them to be heavy though. For daily conceal i use a Kel-tec 380 the most since i can just put it in my pocket, they run around $250. But i do use the sig 228 in a shoulder holster and i love it.

Look at the XD series. I have a couple and they are excellent guns for around $400 new

Its a Good weapon, I beleive it comes in a steel frame , might be a little heavy I saw it on shooting gallery they gave it a good + rateing

I have a kel tec 380, but the thing feels like a toy, and the reliability is questionable, which isnt good for a CCW piece. Kel Tec makes a slightly larger 9mm model called the P-11. They're pretty cheap and i havnt heard too many bad things about them.

the CZs are good 9mms

the other one i would look at are the BHPs (CDNN has em for ~$400)

i have a cz75 compact pcr version. i don't carry it. but yes it is a bit on the heavy side but if you were considering a sig then it is not that much heavier. the compacts come in 2 varieties--pcr (decocker) at 1.7lbs and manual safety at 2lbs. i don't know if those are loaded weights or not--probably not. the p228 has an empty weight of 1.6lbs. the cz is an excellent pistol. i picked mine up at a gun show for $330 new. and i have put more than a few hundred rounds through a p226 and i think the cz75 is more comfortable in my little hands.

CZ is a great gun. If your wanting to keep it cheap and don't like Glocks then maybe a used compact 1911.

Why not the 229 Tutone from CDNN?

I would love to have one...except that I have one 9mm to many!

And I can't afford another caliber.

So good pistol then? I may wait til the next show so I can actually hold it in my hands. I would love to have a commander sized 1911. I like my friend's colt commander, but anything that I would trust is still out of my price range. I might check out the xd, but I'm more of a fan of SA. Got a big show coming on the day of my bday and hope to seriously handle a few guns.

Scrape and save then go with anything SIG. At least that way you won't suffer any buyer's remorse, and you'll have a second-to-none firearm that you'll be satisfied with.

Well, you had to go and say "small frame". There went the Sig 220 (my carry piece). Check Ordnance Outsellers, I think that's the name, they usually have good prices on used Sigs. Also, you might consider a used Sig 225. I've found many at shows for $425 or less. MJD

are you saying that the cz75 is not battleworthy? as i spend more time with my cz75 i am finding that people tend to not think as highly of them because they have rarely heard of them and even then never held or fired one. there seems to be a bias against them solely becuase they are czech. somehow i think i am going to get flamed out over that but oh well.

I got a CZ 2075 with extended mag for Christmas. I have put over 500 rounds of mix and match left over range ammo without one failure. I put hardball and different JHP in the same mag no problem. After carrying a full size 1911 the little CZ is a breath of fresh air. It shoots about 2 inches at 15 yards, and points really well.

I love it. As a side note the little CZ is a ball with +P ammo. I never thought I would like 9 MM again. I can put more shots on target faster than I ever could with a 1911 in 45. Another benefit is the 14 round capacity in a pistol that will fit in your pocket.

Go with a Sigpro. Most underrated gun out there.

I have a P226, a P220, anda Sigpro 2009. Of the three, for some reason I shoot the 2009 the best

You should be able to get used 228s all day long at CDNN. Mine was a CPO in great condition. Hand select, night-sights, plus transfer fee was $410.

Just wait for Glock to come out with their sub-sub-compact single stack 9mm.

I would consider a hammerless J-frame revolver, like the S&W 642 or 442. They're not 9mm, but .38 special is good enough for most situations. They can be had for less than $400, too.

CZ's are nice, but they are heavy and chunky. I used to own a compact CZ in 10mm, and it was far too heavy for its size and was not slim enough for its footprint, IMO.

I wouldn't trust a Kel-Tec as a carry gun.

+1 Its worth how ever long it takes to save for it!
I also suggest looking the the Sig P239. Its a little smaller, lighter and since its a single stack, thinner for carry. Its my favorite CCW and the 229 is my second favorite.

When was this? I look in every new catalogue and I rarely ever see them. Can you call them up and ask for things they don't have advertised?

I just purchased an NIB XD40 sub compact for $399 + 15 shipping came with 3 mags and a holster. These are very reliable, accurate guns and great for CCW. I also have a Taurus PT111 Millennium that is a great CCW and you can find these under $400. I also have the Kel-Tec P323 just for backup. Any of these would be great. Hope this helps ya!

You should be able to get a used 228 or 229 in the $380-$500 range depending on quality. I was at the funstore on Monday and they must have had a dozen or so used sigs for good prices though some of them looked pretty beat up.

It was about 9-10 months ago. I'd be surprised if their next catalog didn't have some in there. You could call Jerry and ask him though, he might have an idea of when they'll get another shipment in.

How about a J frame Smith? very small, comfortable, light (my 340PD only weighs 12 oz. empty). I carry a speed loader or a couple Bianchi speed strips. My 2 cents.

i just had a thought. if chunky is not a problem for you and it seems not to be as you were looking at sigs and glocks you might want to look at the ruger p95. it is almost exactly the same size as the cz75 compact. new models run around $325. i really like mine--never fails to go bang.

HK USP Compact, HK P2000 & P2000 compact, HK P7 series, Glock 19 or any of the smaller Glocks (don’t know the model #s), SIG single stacks, a reputable shop’s 1911s, Walther P99 & P99 compact, Springfield XD & XD compact, and on and on and on. These are good quality guns to look at as a start. You might be able to get a used USPc for $400, but it's doubtful. Glocks are around $400-$450 new. Sigs are around $400 used.

I’m in the USP Compact boat at the moment myself for what it’s worth.

I've had great luck with the Springfield XD line, one of the best values on the market. The one I shoot is the 4 inch 9mm, but I'm eager to get my hands on one of the little 3 inch models
