Any of the compact Smiths. There's about a dozen variations out there. Used ones typically very reasonable on price.

Tell him to look hard at the new Beretta PX4. VERY nice package and affordable if you shop them around. They are available in both "F" and "G" (decock only) models.

when you say manual safety do you mean something a la 1911 or would a grip safety suffice as on a springfield xd? those come in very compact models. but i have no experience with them. would the squeeze cocker of the hk p7 work? it is a bit expensive but the most beautiful pistol i have ever shot.

I have a Taurus PT111 millennium. It has a manual safety. Great gun for carry, fits in your pocket. Not to expensive. Mine feeds every time. Accurate for what it is.

cz75 compact. The 75 D PCR and P01 both have decockers and the accessory rail on the PO1 makes for difficult IWB carry and also a harder time on holster choices.

+1 on the cz75 compacts. but the pcr only has a decocker while the standard compact has the manual safety. the p-01 is not very different fromt the cz75b but as it is the newest thing everybody is saying it is the greatest. the biggest difference is that it has an accessory rail. and for concealed carry that is not likely to be used so imho i don't think it is worth the extra money.

There nothing un-taktikul about carrying a gun with a manual safety, like the S&W or Berettas. Just never assume that the safety lever is going to be where you put it last. Everytime you draw, your thumb should be flicking up at the point on the slide where the safety lever is located when activated, regardless of which way you usually carry it. Developing this habit can help with the decision over whether or not to carry with the safety flipped down on many autos. Not a bad deal if one's bearing any concern regarding retention either. |

+1 I can't believe how cheap S&W autos are and other than being ugly and the company traitorous to gun owners under previous management; I've heard nothing bad about the actual firearms. CDNN usually has a pile of them for less than $275. G |

In a 1911 'style', an option would be a Surplus Star BM.  Usually available for less than $150. Fit's a commander-sized 1911 holster. No grip safety, still has a manual safety sim. to the 1911. |

 LINK HERE The height of the bore axis on an HK doesn’t bother me and I’m a girl when it comes to recoil, but what ever. I still like the PT111 better than the P2000SK just because of the better grip, nice trigger, and manual safety. |

If you mean you want a DA/SA pistol with a manual safety then the CZ75 Compact or RAMI both fit the bill. The HK is much bigger, very tall in the slide like a SIG 228, not really that compact. If you can wait, Tanfoglio (EAA Witness in US) just came out with a gun halfway in size between the CZ Compact and RAMI built on a plastic frame. It is also a full-control pistol, I carry mine chambered at half cock and safety engaged. It is lighter and slightly shorter than the Compact and easier to hold/shoot than the RAMI.

The safety lever is pretty small. I like glocks, but would rather have a Browning Hi-Power, or even a Sig, over one of those. |
