I'm looking for either a .40 or .45 compact to carry around when traveling.  Don't really want to pay anymore than the $280.00 mark.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I did a keyword search of the GunsAmerica site and found a couple of S&W pistols in your price range. They were some .9mm and .40 cals, but no .45's.

I think if you could stretch your budget another $50 or $100 bucks, you might find a used Glock in .40 cal or .45acp.

This is the GunsAmerica site: gunsamerica.com

You might try the GunList too at: gunlistonline.com

Check CDNN.  You have to download their catalog.  Also give them a call, the catalog isn't always up to date, especially for some of the best deals, but they get new deals all the time.  They had some EAA's for good prices in there, which have a pretty good rep.  They had .45's and .40's.  Just checked and they also had a CZ .45

Picked up a Star Firestar .45 auto at the local gun shop a couple of months back. I have had a .40 S&W Firestar for some time and really like it. Both guns shoot great, but of the two, I prefer to carry the .40 as the .45 isnt really THAT much smaller than a commander size 1911 and is pretty thick to boot. The .45 Firestar came with three mags (gun and all mags are the Starvel finish) and was as new in the box for $225.00. The barrel is slightly shorter than commander size, and the frame is about OM size.

For that price range you might want a used .38SP revolver. A new gun in that price range is usually on the verge of unreliable or POS. Like the guy said before...Is the protection of your life only worth that much?

Ya, i've got there latest catalog, always good deals.  I just wanted some opinions on cheaper handguns (price, not quality) from the ar15.com folks

I've got better such as my HK USP9, Walther p99 .40 and a new FN Five-seveN.   I just didn't want a $500-$900 gun sitting in my car that could get ripped off.

While a fine 1911 appeals just as much to you as it does to me, Apple_tech can get all he needs for cheap without having to be shamed with that famous gun snob line.  It wasn't long ago that I was a broke ass college student, and had to wrangle up $200 for a Kel-Tec as my first pistol.  There's lots of good choices in that price range, and a police trade-in S&W 4006 or a Makarov will kill someone just as dead as a $2k Wilson.

Hell, in the CDNN flyer posted above, they have brand new P99 DAO's for $299!

Apple Tech, pay close attention to that CDNN flyer... provided you can find a local dealer who does transfers on the cheap, your goal is very attainable.  Pay close attention to the EAA, CZ , and used S&W offerings.

Edit:  KY Imports and J&G also have good deals on S&W trade-ins, just be sure and avoid the Sigmas.

SGB, I didn't mean that in any sort of personal way.  I saw that, and had somewhat of a flashback to rec.guns in 1999 or so, where quite a few people said that to me instead of actually giving a useful response.  We've all found lots of good options for apple_tech... now I'm kinda curious as to what he picks.

Buy a small car safe, bolt it in and use one of your good guns.  The safes can usually be had for much less than your budget, and you have less worry about it being ripped off!

I'd buy a Steyr M9...its a 9mm but I've had mine for abbout 4-years now and put thousands of rounds through it without a problem.

Here's one for $275.

If $280 is your true max for a handgun, think revolver rather than automatic.

It's hard enough to get a reliable auto pistol, much tougher in this price range.

However, you can get a good .357 revolver in this price range if you shop around.

Revolvers don't get "style points" among some people, but you can bet your life on one!
