What 9mm would you recommend for plinking / target shooting for under $500?

My dad is ready to step up from his .22 target pistol to something a little bigger. He's decided to go with a 9mm because the ammo it pretty cheap. He doesn't want to spend over $500 if possible. The gun will be used for plinking / target shooting.....just having fun.

I've told him to look at the Springfield XD Tactical with the 5" barrel. I have the .40 version of that gun and I love it, I 'm assuming that he would like the 9mm version the same.

Besides the XD .....what other handguns should he look at? The Glock 17 might be something to look at....and I know that Ruger makes a few nice pistols. I saw that Taurus makes a Browning Hio-Power look-a-like for pretty cheap...those any good?

What would you suggest?

Ruger P89. Way cheaper than $500, goes bang every time, and pretty damn accurate too. Ugly as hell though.

I keep one of them around for plinking myself.

SA XD9- there are other guns that will suit you fine but let your dad handle/shoot your foetee XD and see if he likes it. Rugers are OK,they go bang every time, but their ergonomics may leave something to be desired for some people. Whatever floats your boat.

+1 on the CZ.

A CPO Sig is also a good choice.

My brother has one of those Indian Hi-powers which is surprisingly nice. The park is a bit course on them, but if you keep it oiled the park will suck in some more oil and the action has smoothed out very nicely. It was $280 at the local funshop and any and all hi-power mags work... Might be worth looking into if you like SA pistols...

A used Smith and Wesson 39xx or 59xx or 69xx would be picked up for between 270 to 350. Very reliable, low recoil and good ergodynamics. You can pick up one with adjustable sites.

ive got to parrot others on this thread when i say CZ-75. a first class service pistol. as good as any full size 9mm at any price. best part is you can find one for about $350 new. its heavier than the aluminum frame berettas and polymer glocks due to its all steel frame but they are accurate and once worn in they have the nicest double action trigger pull of any service auto i have shot.

You can get a factory reconditioned SIG 226 in 9mm for under $500. They're great guns and a teriffic bargain. That's what I'd get.

Buy a Bulgarian Makarov and then spend the remaining $350 on ammo (9x18 is cheap, too). Or buy those other guns and spend a lot more. Maks are the best $500 gun you can get for less than $200. My .02

Beretta 92FS is a nice gun and can easily be had for under $500 in like new condition. Glocks are fun to plink with. Either would make a fine choice. Both are extremely easy to maintain.

I noticed that the S&W Autos don't get much love here. I was thinking about a 5906. I haven't read anything bad about the 3rd generation autos.

ruger p89 for a metal frame and p95 for polymer. they are simple and cheap--generally no more than $350. cz75 are all metal frames. they are sweet and much more comfortable than the rugers. but it can be hard to find them for $350 in full size--but it will be less than $425 for it. the compacts which i think are a bit nicer are around $330-360.

+100 for the sig 226. You can do a CPO for high 400's. That's what I did. Or you can just do a used one for high 300's (summit, cdnn, mah, etc).

I loved my sig so much I bought another.

Surplus Walther P1 (post-war P38). $250 in excellent condition. I have more fun shooting this gun than any of my more modern guns. Very reliable and accurate. Good sights and a decent single action trigger. I can't believe the Makarov crowd isn't dumping theirs for one of these.

When I bought mine they were $489 but now I think they might all be over $500. If I had only one 9mm it would probably be a:

Walther P99.

I think your best bet would be to get him to a range to rent some and/or set up a local shoot and get some arfcommers to bring a variety of handguns. Most arfcommers seem to have no problem letting others try out their guns.

I shot my SW99 this morning - the Smith version of the Walther P99. I really love that gun - It is very accurate. Either the Walther version with the A/S trigger (not the newer QA) or the SW99 would be my recommendation (not the SW990L - it has a different trigger).

Another one to look at is the FN FNP9, its a really good value for the money as well.....and no there is not a thing wrong with any of the peviously suggested pistols, by the way. I have owned most of them over the years. There is a lot of good 9mm handguns to choose from.
