Good-quality auto, like Microtech or Benchmade.

Of course, I can't get none where I live.

WA has laws preventing that?

Yep.  You can easily own and carry a .45, but not a knife with a spring in it.

Kershaw Ken Onion design spring assist- not a switchblade. It's as fast as the Benchmade and Gerber automatics that I have and you can get them for about $50.  I listed some Gerber Autos for a good price in the EE Blade sections if you are interested in one of them.

still loving my Spyderco Endura, fully serated.  One clipped in the right front pocket, and a matching one in left hand config in the back left pocket.  Wicked sharp.  And affordable.

yea, see i am still having a tough time deciding--i always carry a buck oddeysee (wally world available) for everyday use

sometimes i also carry a SOG pentagon PE folder (works, but gets some use to handling)

but as to fixed blades, i tried to carry a Cold Steel SRK, SOG Pentagon, SOG Seal Pup and they are all too 'big' to go w/ a CCW.....

so i'm thinking a nice sized folder, a fast and reasonably priced one...got lots of research to do w/ all of these options

Non Auto: CKRT M16 series are great,

Auto: If youre on a budget, a Boker AK74 is about 40 bucks. If youve got a hundred or more a benchmade or masters of defense auto is great. I have a MOD CQD and its great!

+1

I have carried M16-13Z for 10 months and don't regret switching from kershaw.  It has a quick relaese tab on the back end, opens quick and easy while still having a hold close detent.  Long, slender, light, and sharp.

Benchmade 960 Osborne.  I love that knife.  I have others, but that's the one I carry most.  If I'm on a long trip, I often put my Chris Reeves Project 1 on the seat beside me.

Benchmade is the only thing I'll carry anymore.  It comes down to the quality and feel for me.  I've got CRKT, Gerber, Spyderco, SOG and a few others I don't remember.  These "other" knives are now sharp and located where I can get one if I need a knife, but I don't carry them or use them daily.

Benchmade's quality and ergonomics  is superior to the other brands listed above IMO.    I don't recommend anything they make with 440 steel though.  I've found that 440 doesn't hold an edge as long as I like and it is more difficult to sharpen than other blade steels.  BM says that is true of the cheaper 440's like 440A or 440B.  I'm not conviced as I have a Griptillian with 440C.

My personal favorite is the Osborne 940 series.  Lightweight, aluminum scales, small seratted portion of the blade.

On the auto thing, I don't see a reason to spend the money.  Most manual openers can be adjusted so they snap open with a flick of the wrist, or practise a little with the stud/hole/flipper and you can open a manual almost as fast as an auto.

For the last couple of years I have carried a Camilus Cuda Maxx 5.5. D2 blade takes and holds a very good edge. It is so light and thin, I forget its there despite its size. The little ears make it very quick to open also.

I carry a Microtech Mini SOCOM Elite Auto and  CRKT Hissatsu.

I only recommend CRKT myself.  Any M16 or the M21 gets my vote.  I carry a M16-10k or a M21 full size.

Try a Piranah, they are made here locally and I have been very happy with mine.  Also an automatic.
