[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Looking for a good 1911? Kimber?

Local gunstore has the Kimber Custom II Stainless 45 ACP (5in barrel, matte finish and rubber grips) on sale for $720. Good deal? I never had an 1911 before or really know much about Kimbers.

Sounds like a pretty good deal to me, that same pistol would go for a lot more around here.

Go for it, the Kiber Custom II's are great.

The best Kimber is the Series 1 guns. The series 2 leave alot to be desired. You might want to take a look at a Springfield Armory. Their 1911-A1 Loaded gun comes stock with ambi safeties, Novak night sights, two mags and a lifetime warranty. We sell them in our shop in WA for $629.99. If you want a stainless gun their loaded stainless has all the same features other than the night sights for $699.99. Just a suggestion.

First production stainless gun:

Lots of rounds down the tube. Accurate, reliable. I recently bought a commander length, same quality. Good stuff.

I'd snacth up a series 1 Kimber, however I'd take a Springfield Loaded over a current Kimber II w/external extractor.

but that's just me.

The local funshop has both Kimbers and S&W 1911s. The one that I like best from just fondling them is the:
S&W 1911

.

Does anyone have any insight on why the Kimber would be better? Curious and want to know prior to slapping down the Uncle Ben's.

Personally, I would take the S&W over the Kimber. SA would be a close second.

i learned to shoot on a para-ord p14-45. so i am a bit partial to them in the 1911 realm. also they have the highest capacities of any 1911.

thats just what they tell you when you are hung like an mouse.

that particular pistol belongs to my friend lt dave. he taught me to shoot. and on that day there were 4 of us at the range all shooting his pistols. the other 2 rookies got the glock 17 and the sig p226. dave was going to have fun with his sig p220 and he decided that i should have the honor of taking my first non-.22lr pistol shots with that relative monster.

i have several colts and a kimber.the kimbers slide cannot wiggle precievably.the colts move,ever so slightly .my kimber has a better factory trigger than my colt colt delta elite.i have nother but praise for kimber.i love my colts too.

I had a Springfield 1911A1 for a couple of years. Dumped it for a Kimber & have never looked back.

My Stainless II has been nothing but gravy. I traded out the rubber stocks for rosewood double-diamonds though. More soul

Check out the 1911 forums.
You will see a lot fewer POed posts from S&W owners then SA or Kimber owners.

Yep. Price & quality comparasions put S&W & SA over the Kimber, IMO. Not that the Kimber is a POS, it's just that I would rate the other two a tad better, all things being equal.

Uhhh.......that's because there are a lot FEWER S&W 1911 owners.

My Kimber Eclipse Pro II (Early Series II run, internal extractor) has always run flawlessly.

My Springfield MC Operator has always been perfect.

With both companies, you should select your model wisely. Do your research.
In my opinion, if you want to stay clear of a "Super Lawyer-Proof" 1911, walk past the Smith.

Sounds like a good deal. I have 2 Kimbers myself, a Custom II & a Pro TLE/RL.
Love'em, never had a problem with either one.
Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

I've got two Colt 1991A1 series 80s, and I like them a whole lot, although I'm not enough into 1911's to recommend any particular brand.

Guess I'm looking for a more objective measure or a more specific answer. I own Kimbers and find them to be very high quality at a reasonable price.

What is better about the SA and the S&W?

That price sounds a bit high to me....
I disagree with the series I vs II comment. I have yet to run into someone who has had a legitamate S II problem. The slightest touch on my grip safety disengages the trigger block on both my S II guns. I have had a couple thousand rounds through my Custom II and never had a malfunction so far. I know it's not that many rounds, but so far so good....

I like the fact that the SA's are virtually MIM part free. Some models have none, IIRC.

I prefer the S&W over Kimber as I see a bit better quality in the fitting, finish, trigger, etc.

Again, this is not to say the Kimber is a POS, don't read that into something when it's not there.

What about the Kimbers with internal extractors (like the warrior)? Still take a SW or SA? My local shop thinks the SW are bad.
