getting my voucher in approx. a week. want to start out with a gun for home defense and range use(mostly). first off , how concerned should i be about caliber? in other words, should i worry about the 9mm being to weak or are all the .45 guys trying to be too tough.second ,glock or hk. i want easy to take down ,very reliable and accurate . are hk's as reliable and easy to take down. opinions on these manufacturer's models as ideas for a 1st handgun

The USP and P2000 series strips down just like 1911s. Pull the slide back about 1 inch and line up the notches and then push out the slide release lever.

9mm is adequate for self Defense with a good HP load and is an easy caliber to learn on. Relatively cheap to shoot too

if 9mm-glock 17 or 19 or hk p2000 or usp 9. if .40-glock 22 or 23 or hk p2000 or usp .40(compact or full). if .45- g21 or usp .45(compact or full) btw ..small to med sized hands

Personally, I'd go with a USPF in .45 for the home and range.

I'd lean Glock/SIG myself, but only because those two feel better in my hands than HK. 9 is fine, .45 still works too, get what you shoot better with/fits your budget better. Oh and regardless of caliber, use quality ammo for defense. Cheap .45 ball for range use is easy enough to find, but 9mm ball is usually a couple dollars cheaper. 9mm is better for longer ranges due to a flat trajectory, but I don't think this is an issue in this case. Hey, who's got that famous gelatin test pic that shows a variety of service pistol cartridges and how they all perform about the same ?

Don't overlook a Walther P99.

Very simple takedown/reassembly. Very ergonomic and well balanced. I have one in 9mm, and one in .40S&W. And of course, it is one tough weapon.

I have owned HK and Glock. Both are very reliable and quality pistols. It is all personal preference. If you want a hammer and manualy saftey get the HK if you want to save some $$ and do not care about the hamer or manual saftey I recomend the Glock. If you get the .45 I would recomend holding both to see which one fits you better. I have a Glock 19 and use it for both home defense and carry. I have .45s too though.
