I'm interested to see what the hive's choice in a service pistol is.

Oops wrong area, this is embarrassing that I posted this in here

Modern 9mm double stack pistols are night and day better suited for duty.
|
|
I say this as someone who loves the crap out of his Colt Custom Shop M45A1: there is literally zero reason to use a 1911 over a modern double stack 9mm as a service pistol.
It's heavy, its capacity sucks, while parts might be interchangeable they're not nearly interchangeable to the degree of more modern designs making it more laborious and expensive to service on a large scale, and the list goes on and on. If you just want .45ACP, something like the USP would beat the 1911 to death and dance on its grave with regards to durability and reliability. The 1911 was a great weapon for its time, and continues to be a great enthusiast's weapon today, but its time as a realistic service pistol has long passed. |

I like 1911’s but the only way I’d run one as a service pistol or carry gun was if it’s a 2011. They’re awesome but even then I’d still probably stick to the polymer guns because of the weight.

I carried a single stack 1911 in .45ACP for the last 11 years as a duty gun. I carried it 4 years prior to that and continuously as a CCW. I recently switched to a Staccato P 2011 for both.
For the last 11 years, my reasoning was always that I am a believer in .45 ACP and would rather have 11 rounds that go exactly where I want to place them over 18 rounds that I have to force into place. I don't shoot the Glock family of handgun well as the grip angle is all wrong for me. S&W M&P series were fine after a trigger swap, but nothing matched the "pointability" of the 1911. In typical AFCOM fashion, I got both. I'll take your capacity and my ergos. No regrets. Staccato shoots like a dream (especially with a RMR) and I carry a 20 rounder (20+1) in the gun with 3 20 rounders on my belt. 81 rounds compared to my previous .45 loadout of 51 rounds in less reloads. For the speed in which I can stack rounds and save on reloads, I'll take the caliber hit for now. |

My ideal duty handgun would have to fit the following criteria (thinking if I were issuing en masse to a military branch of LEO agency)...
1. Reliability; not just in general function, but also tolerant of *some* abuse/neglect. 2. A prolific yet affordable support base (holsters, mags, parts, accessories, etc.) 3. Easy to maintain; less labor intensive at the operator and armorer level. 4. Capacity of at least 15 rounds. 5. Affordable; budget conscious price per unit. That said...Glock or M&P. |
|
I absolutely love the 1911 platform. It’s solid, accurate and actually carries quite well. That being said...I can’t say that I’d choose to carry it on a daily basis over a Glock, Sig or Smith.
I have carried a 1911 a few times. And, while it’s fairly thin, it’s heavy and has a limited capacity. These days, I want the capacity along with being accurate. I tend to carry my P365 or P365XL since I can have 15 round magazines in a much lighter package. Not knocking the 1911. One of my favorite platforms. But, it’s a new world out there and I’d like to have every advantage that I can. |

The 1911 is an ideal carry gun for self defense if you ask me. Slim, powerful, great accuracy. But a lot of people love the wonder 9's also. They are getting smaller and smaller with good capacity like the Sig P365. It's a little too small for me, but I might check out the Sig P365XL. Of course the Glock 19 is the gold standard when it comes to wonder 9's.

Quoted: IBTM Get both! I love my 9mm 1911! But... I just don't carry it nearly as much as my G43's and G19's. Get both because options are good. IMO, the 1911 lends itself to being very good IWB because of it's thinness. But... then you have extra weight and less capacity compared to a double stack poly gun. https://i.ibb.co/BqH6qqS/cxxv.jpg View Quote |

View Quote I love my STI DVC’s, I’d suggest shooting a M17 with a Wilson grip module if you ever get the chance. It points just like a 1911/2011 and shoots like a striker fired 2011. I’m sold on the platform. |

I went a little bit off the wall this year. Before Covid I bought a new Wilson EDCx9. Then saw a practically new 2nd one for 60% off what the first cost. (And grabbed it.)
Even with all the ammo issues and range closing I’ve gotten 8K thru the 1st gun. It is the double stack 9. Light weight. Same size as my Glock 19s Designed as a 1911 with all the 1911 trigger goodness. Uses MecGar mags which I trust And is Accurate with a capital A. Negative is the where the grip safety would be feels like a Berretta instead of a 1911. Gun simply checks all the boxes. Only people that read Forums like this would spend that kind of money instead of a gun that checks the boxes for $500.00 |

I have a Sig 1911 that I love shooting. I straight up shoot it better than any other pistol I've ever used. I'd also choose any legit striker-fired 9mm over it as a duty/carry gun. I'm firmly a Glock guy in that regard.

I've dumped all my Glock's and now only have a Sig P220 a DW Vigil Commander in .45 and a Ruger EC9s (EDC gun). I don't feel undergunned with any of them even though they are single stacks, I just carry an extra mag.
There's just something about all metal guns, they feel more substantial, the plastic feels cheap even though they've proven their durability. |

To me traditional1911 92s and full size revolvers fall in the same class. They are effective and useable but ideal.
eta I carry a p365 but own all of the above. |

Quoted: Compromise caliber.... more recoil than 9, less effective than .45. Pick a side, get both, but don't meet in the middle with mediocrity View Quote Not true....40 usually has more FPE than 45 and better sectional density. For many years 40 was only service caliber that could pass FBI specs through auto glass. There’s still only a few in 45 |

For service use? Like military? Capacity isn't a huge deal. Weight is. A military sidearm is seriously not that big of a deal. I've posted 1st Sgt Kasals pic a few times but more magazines or grenades are usually way more important.
For personal use? I prefer 1911s. They're thinner which makes edc more comfortable. I like them more too. |
|
Personal preference and purpose, but generally speaking, a polymer striker gun is much more practical in about every way.
|
|
|
I just don’t enjoy a 1911
Glock 17 is my preferred handgun Thinking about a 21 today |
|
To me that's kind of an apples and oranges comparison but whatever.... While I do truly love and appreciate the 1911, I personally would always choose a quality double stack, striker fired 9mm over a 1911 (in any caliber) for SD or service duty work.

View Quote Granted its all personal choice but to be clear, no 1911 is thinner or lighter then something like a G43x/G48 and you can get flush fit 15rd mags for them. The G43x/G48 has got to be 1 of the most comfortable, full grip CCW weapons out there. |
|
I'm not a cop, only carrying for personal concealed carry.
The weight difference between my Commander sized carry gun and a Glock 19 (both loaded) is about 10 ounces. I tried the Glock for awhile....with proper belt and holster, that 10 ounces is not something that bothers me. I prefer the 1911 because I shoot it well, and I like 45acp over 9mm. Capacity doesn't concern me. |

I love 1911s. Always have. Shot them
In matches and train with them, etc. still a good thing and I believe an enthusiast gun. Takes a bit more work than a polymer whatever to be great with it and great is a bit better than you can get with a stock service 9mm plastic gun Look at USPSA open class. Anything goes. Anything to make the gun fast and accurate. Almost 100% of people winning are shooting a 2011 with optics. They simply shoot better if you put in the work. Am I willing to put in the work to get that slightly better performance? Not now. I have young kids. I’m tired. I want something I don’t super have to worry about. So for now the Baer is on the back burner and a Sig 365xl is in its place. Thinner, lighter, more rounds, has red dot. Both 9 and 45 suck for defense so may as well pick something and roll with it |
