For me I would say the FN FNX45 tactical.
I like the 1911'ish controls and the glock capacity. Backstrap is interchangeable and it is the only 45auto that come with threaded barrel, raised night sights, optic ready and a case for 3 mags and a can. Being a HK guy I loved the mk23 but finding them now at a fair price and dealing with HK wasn't for me.  " />

I've got lots of 1911s, a 41, and a G4 30S.

The only .45s I currently own, and the only ones I'd definitely keep, are two 1911s - one is a DW and the other an old Springfield. Both were guns that came to me in the worst way possible, the death of a family member. Lots of fond memories shooting those guns when they were my Uncle-in-Laws, so they will always stay in the safe. I set myself up to load .45 years back, so every once in a while I run off some 230 gr FMJ over Bullseye.

I have my old Colt M1911 and like it but consider it obsolescent.
I also have a Glock 41 that I like. Considered the FNX45 but the 41 came my way at a deal so... Anyway, I guess my point is the G41 really satisfied my wanting for a whole bunch of .45s. Maybe go look at a G21 if the size of the 41 is too much. Just a side note their are 10mm conversion barrels available for the 41, and logic would say the 21 should have them as well. |

I didn't read the whole thread so...
There isn't one, the minimum is four: 1) A 5" 1911 Govt Model. 2) A .22 conversion kit for that gun and a large pile of .22's. 3) A shorter maybe "lightweight" 1911. 4) A revolver. Extra points if it's (either) 1917 but any will be OK. After that ya get whatever tickles your fancy but those four are the bare minimum to exist happily and be a competent adult in .45 Auto land. My opinion only. |

HAD G21 gen 4 (probably my 2rd) , G21 SF with threaded barrel and G41 until recently but sold or traded them all.
HAD FNX45, sold it too to some one else who wanted it more. Still have SA 1911 GI after all these years. Gonna keep it just because it's my only 45 steel frame. Also, keeping the G30 SF and G30 gen 4 which I got them for really cheap. I shot them really well (like putting all 48 out of 50 rds in the black circle at 7 yards this past weekend using Wolf ammo), which some how I could never came close routinely with the full size or even with the FNX however. These will be it for me as far as 45 is concerned. |

Here's how I see it, I would keep the G21 regardless because of the polymer pistols out there, to me the G21 (more specifically the Gen4) is my all around favorite. It's not little, but it's fairly light and has good capacity and shoots so easy and hell, it's accurate.
I would save up until you can afford to also add a 1911 without having to get rid of anything. The only reason I mention the 1911 is because if you're sticking with .45 ACP then it would hard for me personally to not have a 1911. You don't have to spend a ton to get a decent one, but at the same time, you don't want to buy a junk 1911 either. If you're looking to get one that's pretty good and not too bad expensive, I'd look at the Range Officer lineup from Springfield. Ruger makes a pretty solid 1911 for the money, I'd slightly rather have the Springfield though. Stay far away from Kimber. These suggestions are based on spending less than $1K on a 1911. |

You might want to journey a bit further by having your 'smith fit a NM bushing to the barrel of that roscoe. That'll tighten up your groups significantly - like from a so-so shotgun pattern @ 30-ft to a shredded 'egg-hole' of a group. You can thank me later.

If you have any other pointers, I am all ears. I could probably shoot a 1-2 inch hole at 10 yards. |

The only .45 ACP I currently own is a 1911. Out of all the .45 ACP's I have owned all but one were 1911's. I bought a Glock years ago, kept it two weeks and swore I'd never own another one.

A number of years ago I bought a g21 trying to become more modern, I hated it, I sold it at the very next gun show. The one I would never get rid of is my Gold Cup national match. That and a u.s. Navy Ithaca from 1943.
