[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Which stainless .45acp for a car gun?

I'm selling my current car gun, an FEG Hi-Power clone, in order to put something with more oomph under my seat. Since this gun will not be carried (I have an XD subcompact for that) it should be a full size .45. The two choices that I'm leaning towards right now are a used stainless Sig P220 from Southern Ohio Gun or a new stainless Springfield mil-spec 1911. The Sig will cost around $50 more.

Please discuss. If you don't like either choice please give me an alternative, full size pistol in .45acp.

I think a so-called "car gun"...a handgun, anyway... should probably have the capability of "point and shoot" in case someone other than yourself may need to use it. I have also heard of some issues with the Springfield stainless slides in the past...someone posted a pic here once of one that broke in half when fired. Frankly, either one of these guns is gonna hurt if it gets stolen. (not that others would not) I would choose the Sig of the two you specified. but I think my choice for this duty just might have to be a Glock 30 if it was me.

My "car gun" is a Glock 23. Costs less than a stainless 1911. Capable of getting knocked around or in worse case stolen. (Even though I take it out every night.)

Unless being a lawyer pays all that well, I would get a P220 from CDNN for $379 and GunKote or Alumahyde it for rust resistance. Glock would be a good choice in that situation as well, since a car gun very well may get stolen, and used Glocks a CHEAP.

I would use the car, chances are you can take down your aggressor with one hit, if not just throw it into reverse

Hey Duke on a more serious note I think I would get the Sig 220, I'm not a real big Springfield Armory fan................other than that I would look for a Colt 1911 in Stainless

dpmmn, I like the Colt 1991A1 type but damn they are expensive around here, people want alot for anything with a pony on it.

I didn't realize CDNN had P220s so cheap. I'm going to have to take another look at their catalog.

What's the capacity on a post-Clinton Glock 21 magazine? Maybe a used one of those would be appropriate?

13 rounds, and the mags are ~$20 right now.

+1 for the G21. A Glock is about the best beater weapon for your truck. I've had one riding with me for years, so I'm not just blowing smoke.

What about a Smith and Wesson 625? I don't know why but when I think of a car gun, I think revolver.

Don't like Rugers, want an automatic. Since its a car gun there's no limit to how many spare mags I can keep with it. My current car gun has 62 rounds loaded in mags with it, and my future car gun will need at least 40 rounds even in .45acp.

I don't reload fast with a revolver. And no, I'm not planning on missing alot, I'm planning on firing multiple times at multiple adversaries until I survive the encounter.

Go with the Sig. If it has been taken care of by the previous owner, it will take care of you. My buddy got his 226 used and it has never malfunctioned in over 5 years. That's with just a field strip cleaning with CLP and all the original springs. Tough as nails.

Smith and Wesson 4506. Still easy to find. Stainless. .45 acp. lifetime warranty. Relatively inexpensive.

I tend to agree. I USE to have a KelTec 380 auto in my rig, but I thought if I ever had someone confront me while I was in my SUV and they were walking up to me, that they might laugh if I pulled a 380 out. So I now carry my S&W SS 6inch 357mag, if that big honker does not scare the shit out of them, nothing will.

Between 220 and Springfield MilSpec I'd go with the 220.

Get a used G21 and buy a couple 13rd mags for $20 each and leave it in the car if you want. Glock is by far the best gun for leaving in a car since they are practically indestructable and always go bang when you pull the trigger. That is what I would use as a car gun if I wanted to leave one in my car all the time.

I don't have a 220 but I am considering it. I do have a loaded 1911A1 Springfield that I use primarily for target shootin. It is O.K. Not the best in my opinion for self defense. I have a P239 and a P229 and love them both i use them for CCW preferring the P229 because it feels more natural in my hand. FWIW the P229 has had +14,000 rds through it now and had never given problems whatsoever.

My decision has been made. I'm ordering a two-tone P220 from CDNN for $440. The base gun is $400, $20 for a handpick, and $20 for night sights.

Looks like a 1911 will have to wait till another day, the Sig's ultimate reliability under all conditions and the affordability of this particular offering won out.

Excellent choice! The 1911 is a great gun, but I happen to think the Sig is a better gun for the job at hand.

My 4506 is a bit too heavy to carry on a regular basis, but it's dependable and accurate. They are also easily found for under $400.

From the 2 choices mentioned, I would go with the Sig 220. Those Sig 220s are the best kept secrets of the shooting world. They're accurate and fairly inexpensive, and Sig's triggers are some of the best out of the box. The venerable 1911s are good classics, but there a lot better newer designs.

i'm late but i'd buy the Sig. 1911's can be finicky and doesn't have a very high capacity mag.

that said, i own a 1911.
