Never having one myself, I do recall hearing mostly good about Smith's lower buck alloy frame compact .45 ACP.

I owned one several years ago and got rid of it. It was typical S&W quality. Personally I would go for an HK P2000, USP, or a Kimber.

Holding one in my hand was like holding a 2x4: no ergonomics at all.

I had one as my first 45, and replaced it with a USPc.  It didn't weigh a lot, was not very ergonomically designed, and shot okay.  I think I paid ~$350 for it a few years back.
