I am aware that a parent/guardian may purchase a handgun for a juvenille (under 18) for the use of ranching, target shooting, etc...

I am aware however a juvenille may not purchase the firearm OR ammunition on his/her own...

My question is this: May an adult, age 18, have a handgun for the same purposes as a juvenille--ranching, target shooting, hunting?

May that 18 yo aquire a handgun by means of trade with a nonliscensed individual?

Thanks for the help, as I couldn't find this on atf.gov

In some states yes... but only in a private sale.  The problem will be finding that individual who is willing to sell to someone 18+ but less than 21 years of age.

www.packing.org is a good place to check your state laws about that.
Here is the link

I also find it amusing that an 18 year old can buy an AR15, or AK47, but not a walther P22

An 18 year old can't buy an AK47.

Why not?

Federal law says that you may posses a handgun at 18 but must be 21 to purchase.

An 18 y/o certainly may purchase an AK47... I owned one, well two actually.  A Romanian WASR-10 and a MAK-90

Isn't an AK47 sort of like an M16, in that it is select fire. Aren't Class III items restricted to those 21+?

True, Class III is restricted, but...

AKs can be had--and are more common to the public-- as semi only and thus would be beter compared to an AR15... 18+
