My father just gave me his Combat Commander he bought used back in '74 or '75.  It looks to be in excellent shape, all original as I can tell.  Can anyone give me some information on this model?  I would like to get its date of manufacture, if anyone knows how I can do this.  I was also wondering if this baby would make a good carry piece?  Thanks

Pre-70 series Commanders were made from 1950-1976. Calibers were 9mm, .38Super & .45acp. 98% value is $650 for .45acp.

Series 70 were made from 1970 to 1983. Calibers included .30 Luger.  98% value is $725.

LW Commanders are worth about $25-50 more. The .30 Luger caliber is worth $2,000 in 98%. 5 were sold in the US in 1971.

Series 80 1911s started in 1983.

All info is out of the Blue Book. Hope this helps.

Ther is no such thing as a 70 series commander. It either has a firing pin saftey (80 series) or it doesn't.

There is the Combat Commander(steel frame) and the Commander ( lightweight alloy frame). There was a series 70 Combat Commander because I had one in satin nickle . It was my first handgun. (Damn I'd like to have that on back.) Either would make a excelent carry piece.

The Combat Commander is a great pistol. It was the first keeper pistol I ever bought. As time went by and my state adopted the right to carry law, I learned a few things I did't like about it. First, its not the length of the slide that is hard to conceal its the length of the frame. Second, the Combat Commander is only a few ounces lighter than a full size 1911. I sold my commander a year ago and started carrying a full size 1911. To me the light weight commander makes a lot of since. The Combat Commander is a answer to a question that doesn't exist. But hell if its free and has family value there is nothing better !!!!!!

Moxnix228 is correct, NO series 70 commanders/combat commanders or lw commanders. Colt never made a Commander size 1911 in Series 70.

Page 474 of the 23rd Edition of the Blue Book lists a Series 70 LW Commander. Page 475 lists a Series 70 Combat Commander.

My very first pistol was a Satin Nickel Combat Commander... Man do I wish I had it back.. That was '82 or thereabouts.. Next to my ProCarryII HD it was the best handgun I think Ive ever owned..

Yeah, I think I am going to like the pistol.  I am taking it to the range this weekend to see what sort of ammo it likes.  I read that they don't like many JHP.  It also needs some different sites, IMHO as the factory ones leave something to be desired.  Maybe a trip to Clark's Customs is in order.....

Seriously...............Colt NEVER made a Series 70 Commander/Combat Commander or LW Commander.

So the Blue Book has lied all those editions? No one bothered to correct them on this huge error? Isn't this just a tad bit hard to believe? No offense. Doesn't everone consider the Blue Book to be damn near perfect in accuracy?
