Hey guys,

This is the Hi Power that I asked you all about last fall - I was able to get it used for $350 and am very happy with it!  I appreciate all your answers and advice in helping me purchase my first Browning.

It appears to be some kind of former police or military pistol that was imported at some point in its life.  It has some interesting armory markings stamped on it, and the only thing stamped on the slide is "F.N.Browning" - I'm considering upgrading the sights and safety, but I may just leave it as is - a classic, basic Browning.

No, I don't have any place to host them.  Are there any places you can host them for free?

It now has about 10,000 more rounds on it since this picture and except for the KKM Match Barrel breaking is holding up well. I've been real impressed with the Roguard/NP3 finish.

Bart Roberts,
That IS a sweet piece. What kind of hammer is that?  And the grips? I'd like to get that hammer on mine.
Link Posted: 7/20/2003 11:35:43 AM EDT
[#23]
The hammer is a Cylinder and Slide Commander style hammer. The grips are Spegel Cocobolo grips. I've been very pleased with both although the Cocobolo gets darker over time as it soaks up sweat and oil. It has a Roguard/NP3 finish.

Here is the same gun 11,498 rounds and 3 years of regular carry later:

Here are the details on the KKM break (skip down to the April 20, 2002 entry)

www.ont.com/users/kolya/HiPo.htm

That page is my little online Hi-Power diary. I keep track of round count and what breaks so that others can get an idea of what to expect. I am getting ready to update it for the 3yr. birthday of the custom work.

Very informative reading, especially the part about dealing with Kurt.  Also good stuff about Roguard and NP3, looks like you're discovering these finishes aren't as durable as some folks would have you believe.

Lumpy, doesn't look plain to me at all. I like that combo - it looks sharp.

Well, to be fair to Wickamnn's, the work he did was excellent. No complaints at all with it. I just didn't feel comfortable doing business with him anymore because I had no idea what was going on and nobody was talking to me to let me know.

ken_mays:

Well, they aren't an indestructible uber-finish to be sure. In particular I've found the claim that you can run NP3 dry because it is self-lubricating to be an exaggeration. The gun will work like that; but the NP3 will wear off and a lot faster than it would with a little lube too. I think most people don't notice the increased wear because the bare metal isn't a much different color than the dull grey of NP3.

Having said that; both the recoil spring guide and the firing pin retaining plate had a nearly perfect coating of NP3 even after the parts themselves had cracked from mechanical stress.

As you can see in the second set of pictures, Roguard does wear with use; but considering the amount of use, I am pretty pleased. Compared to Black-T (the only other space age finish I was able to comapre it against) or traditional finishes, Roguard comes out way on top.

Here is a new shot of the slide:

Here is the same slide at about 4,500 rounds:

Here it is at 11,482 rounds:

Note: In last picture, NP3'd match barrel has been replaced with uncoated stock barrel and the firing pin retaining plate notch is broken on one side

So, all in all, not too bad in the wear resistance department.

Thats a shame about Kurt, considering he used to be Novak's HP guy.  Ive heard that he was good for while when he first went off on his own, but has become bad at communication.

I just bought this (haven't seen it yet but I hope it looks as good as the pictures.) and was thinking about getting some custom work done to it (maybe an AMBI safety, trigger job with C&S hammer and Sear, and Novak Night sights)

Or I might just bob the hammer add the ambi-safety and melonite treat the metal, basically making the trigger components 50-55RC like the C&S components. I'll have to talk to EGSW and see if they think that would do the trick.

I was hoping to see some pictures of some custom hi-powers to get some ideas.

Also I kind of like the idea of a re-contoured ambi safety from a MKIII hi-power, does anyone have a MKIII Ambi safety they could sell?

Anybody know if Olympic Arms BHP barrels are any good? Will the gun shoot better with one drop-in fitted?

Are they one piece? or two?

I purchased this MK I BHP new in 1987 to celebrate my 21st birthday. It was the first gun I ever owned and the one I had always lusted for.  She’s had some basic work (e.g. mag safety removal, crowned barrel, polished feed ramp and a respectable 5# trigger job) but, cosmetically, she remains as natural as the day she was born (grips don’t count).

Shown here with my FAL and a bar of Galler milk chocolate - the Belgian Royal Warrant Holder - and the smoothest chocolate you'll ever taste.

Well my Inglis just showed up today and WOW! She is as close to a new Inglis Hi-power as I've ever seen. The grease in side of her and the mag looks like the original factory grease and the barrel looks new other than proof firing. There are some handling marks but this baby is amazing!
