so im a cop and this guy stopped me today and asked what pistol he should get he said he wanted a pistol to put in his truck for protection but he also wanted to shoot it for fun  occationally i told him a smith and wesson m&p in a 9mm, .40, or .357 sig caliber any thoughts on what the best all around pistol in this price range would be?

That's a hard one to put a definitive answer to. I see the merits in a GI 1911 like a Rock Island or S.A. Mil-spec, I had an M&P 40 and loved it, you could also list the Beretta 92 and PX4's, I'm sure someone will mention Glock. CZ 75's are badass and so are their clones by Tanfoglio, Springfield XD's have their fans.

The best all around hand gun is the one that tickles the individuals fancy. I prefer my S.A. GI 1911 for it's old school looks, charm, handling, and accuracy.

If he wants to keep it in his truck I would say go with something that is pretty well moisture proof.

That would be a Glock.  They are pretty well moisture proof.

Any Glock in the 9 40 357sig  range other than the competition models would suit him well.

If he likes to shoot 9mm would be the least expensive ammo so why not a 17 or a 19.

Truth be told, if he had to ask such a basic question, I would have told him to get a Smith 10, load it with 158 gr LSWCHPs, wrap it in a rag to keep the dirt out and call it good.

I would say either a Glock or a used HK USP in 9 or 40.  Both are going to be dead nuts reliable and will work in any conditions.  Great for a truck gun.

I would say that what you told him is spot on. M&P's are great pistols. For carry I use the M&P40c model. If the guy doesn't plan to carry it just keep it in the car then the M&P40 mid-size is a great choice and has good ammo capacity. Might I suggest that he get some kind of secure locking device to keep it in so some thieving punk doesn't break in his car and use it in a crime. I drive a Jeep Wrangler and keep mine in Tuffy steel console. It would take a considerable amound of time and effort to break in that to get anything.

Tell him to go to the gunstore and pick up a Glock, an XD and a Smith M&P. Whichever feels best to him he should buy. There are other great guns too but that is where I would start.

I don't think I would give a single brand as the guy might take that to mean that the others are substandard and end up buying a gun that may not be best for him personally.

Glock 19/17, cheap ammo, cheap mags, cheap parts, reliable, accurate, user friendly, the list goes on and on.  Im not a fan boy, but you cant go wrong with a glock.

What is best is subjective question I would say almost any pistol in the $500-700 range is going work just fine for what he wants. The best thing he can do is go to range and test out a bunch and see what fits the best. Glocks are not the answer to every question although here you will get a lot of it. I prefer Beretta, although I am considering a M&P 9mm or 40 S&W one of these days.

ANY of the following will be a top notch option:

Walther P99 or PPQ
Glock 19
HK USP and USPc (lightly used models for 600 are not uncommon)
Caracal
M&P

600 gives a large range of pistols.  Out of personal preference I would get a used Sig.  On a lower end of the budget with it staying in a truck.  A S&W sigma in 9mm wouldn't be a bad choice.  That way if it gets beat to crap or stolen your not out a bunch of money.

Glock, M&P, XD, or a poly framed CZ in no particular order. The smith SD value line are pretty nice pistols as well, or a used HK if you can find one in that price range and dont mind the mag price.

4" .357 mag in just about any flavor is a very good first pistol.

Ive been very impressed with my Zastava EZ9.Ive ran the pistol alot in the last two years and its shown to be very robust.

http://www.k-var.com/shop/ZEZ9-101.html

Beretta 92FS mags work in the EZ9 if the mag catch hole is relocated to the front.Modified all my Beretta 92FS mags to allow them to work in the EZ9 in a matter of a few minutes per mag.Simplified my mag selection greatly.
Just about any holster made for the SIG P226 rail models fit like a glove.I use DeSantis 3 slot pancakes for CCW and the Blackhawk Serpa for field and range.
Disassembles just like a SIG,so its familiar and simple..
Great quality and featuresIMHO.I especially like the ambi decockers and mag release. The barrel is hard chrome inside and out....all parts are serialized and proofed, and comes with a qualifying Serbian Gov't proof firing certificate which is pretty cool.
Anyway great pistol for $400.00.

I'd go with the S&W Shield if he can find one.

I would stronly recommend the Sig Sauer SP2022. It is avilable in 9mm, .40S$W, and soon .357 Sig. Thsi is probably one of the least know and under rated handguns on the market. Just Google Sig 2022; it is a phenominal hand gun.

S&W 5906 police trade in or FEG Browning high power clone.  Both seem to be good shooters and cheap enough to leave in a truck.

new for under $600:
Glock 17/19/22
CZ 75B
Ruger P-series
S&W M&P

I'm biased towards them but you can't go wrong with either a Glock or a CZ
